    Steps to Apply

    We recommend you start the process of applying to Seattle Public Schools as early as possible. Please know that failure to fully complete an application could result in that application not being considered.

    1. Make sure you have or are in the process of obtaining the proper certification. Visit the website for the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) for specific information on how to certify in Washington State. You will not be able to start employment until you have the proper certificate. 
    2. Fill out an online Job Interest Card to receive automatic e-mail alerts once positions are available.
    3. Visit our Careers Page to apply for open positions.

    Please note the following:

    1. A University Placement File and/or confidential reference letter may be e-mailed/faxed to certificatedreferences@seattleschools.org / 206-743-3050 (Attn: Certificated References).  Please note that mailed placement files and/or reference letters are not accepted. 

    After you submit your online application for a position, please send an email request to recruitmentreferences@seattleschools.org with the name of the application to attach your placement file and/or confidential reference letter(s). For confidential letters, please also indicate the last name of the writer(s).

    2. You will not be hired for a position if you do not have a Washington State certificate with the appropriate endorsement(s).

    3. Subject-Specific - To teach in the areas of Bilingual, English Language Learner, or Special Education or grade levels 6-8, you must be highly qualified in the specific subject areas taught in addition to having the specialized endorsement.

    Types of External Teaching Applicants:

    An external applicant is anyone who is not a current part-time or full-time contracted certificated staff member with Seattle Public Schools. Types of external teaching applicants include the following:

    1. Recent college graduate from an approved Washington State Certificated Employee Preparation Program for the above types of certificated positions

    2. Current certificated Washington State employee with at least one year of certificated experience (either substitute or full-time). This includes current short-term or long-term substitute at Seattle Public Schools

    3. Out-of-state applicant with a current or in-process Washington State teaching or ESA certificate

    Recent college graduate from an approved Washington State Certificated Employee Preparation Program

    Application Requirement

    Proof of Certification with stated endorsements

    • Please attach one (1) of the following:
      A six (6)-month Washington State Permit provided by your college

      FOR HIRING DURING THE SUMMER (ONLY): A signed, official letter in either .pdf or .jpeg format provided by your certificate-granting institution that confirms your graduation date, receipt of a valid Washington State teaching or ESA certificate, and identifies endorsements you will have by the beginning of the upcoming school year.

    Unofficial Transcripts

    • Please attach your unofficial transcript(s) from your degree granting higher education institution.

    Current certificated Washington state school employee with at least one year of teaching experience (either substitute or full-time)

    Application Requirement

    Proof of Certification with stated endorsements

    • Please attach a scanned copy of your current Washington State Teaching or ESA Certificate.

    Unofficial Transcripts

    • Please attach your unofficial transcript(s) from your degree granting higher education institution.

    Out-of-State applicant with a current or in-process Washington state teaching certificate

    Application Requirement

    Proof of Certification with stated endorsements

    • Please attach one (1) of the following:
      A valid copy of your Washington State Teaching or ESA certificate
    • FOR HIRING DURING THE SUMMER(ONLY):A signed letter in .pdf format from you, the applicant, stating that you will have a valid Washington State teaching or ESA certificate and identifying endorsements you will have by the beginning of the upcoming school year.

    Unofficial Transcripts

    • Please attach your unofficial transcript(s) from your degree granting higher education institution.
