    Seattle Public Schools’ Strategic Plan, Excellence for All, commits the District to ensuring high expectations and a high quality school for every student. As part of a system-wide effort to increase the number of Seattle Public School students that graduate from high school prepared for college and the 21st century work force, Seattle Public High Schools (SPS) has committed to a curriculum alignment in core academic subjects across all Schools. Science classes in all SPS high schools began alignment during the school year 2009-2010.

    An aligned curriculum is a coherent and consistent progression of content, instruction, and assessment within and across a course of study.

    Core science courses will align to the following college and career-ready standards:

    Horizontal and Vertical Alignment

    Furthermore, each course in the core curriculum will be aligned horizontally with identified course outcomes so that courses with the same name across SPS high schools reach the same goals.  Some content courses will be aligned vertically to ensure students possess the knowledge and skills to be successful in the next course in the sequence.  Where skill and content knowledge is not required for the subsequent course, the content of the course will increase in challenge and academic content.  Not only will the high school curriculum be aligned to the college ready state standards but also to the middle school curriculum that precedes the high school educational experience.

    Common Assessments

    In addition to measuring student progress, guiding teachers’ instruction, and focusing student learning, common assessments will also inform building improvement and district-wide decisions pertaining to curriculum and instruction.


    High School Science Adoption

    The Instructional Services Department's science staff is planning for an adoption process for high school Physical Science,  Chemistry, and Physics instructional materials that is starting on December 8, 2010 and will end in spring 2011. The process for applying to become a member of this Instructional Materials Adoption Committee will begin on December 8, 2010 and close on January 6, 2011. Applicants will be notified no later than January 14th.


    Coming Soon

    • The top three sets of materials for physical science, chemistry, and physics will be announced after February 18, 2011. 
    • From March 7, 2011 to March 21, 2011 the top three sets of materials for each of the three domains will be on display in five high schools in the five regions of the city. We will announce the locations at this Web site as soon as they are determined. There will be opportunity to provide feedback at these sites for these two weeks. 
    • We will provide on this Web site links to view the three sets of materials at the publisher’s Web site, so that you could view them at home as well. This was suggested by parents and is a very good idea. 
    • More information will be coming soon! We greatly appreciate your input. It is valued and used in this process. 

    Completed to Date

    • The Adoption Committee was selected on January 10, 2011 and was approved by the Instructional Materials Committee (IMC) on January 12, 2011. 
    • The Adoption Committee met for the first time on Feb. 1, 2011 to lay the ground rules and develop the Screening Tools. 
    • The Screening Tools have been developed by the Adoption Committee and revised based on recommendations from the IMC and approved again by the Adoption Committee. 
    • We have hired an outside expert to facilitate the Adoption Committee’s decision making. She is a former high school and middle school science teacher and has successfully provided professional development and supported adoption processes in other districts in our region for several years. Our Science Coaches and Program Manager are working with this facilitator and the Adoption Committee members to support the work. Having the outside facilitator is a step to keep bias out of the process.
    • The Adoption Committee has meet on Thurs., Feb. 10th and will meet on  Mon., Feb. 14th all day to review materials. On Monday, they will select an additional day to meet to complete the selection of the top three sets of instructional materials for physical science, chemistry, and physics.
    • Sets of instructional materials were on display in the Stanford Center from January 31st to Feb. 11th.  (This is a new step in the Adoption Process. There are approximately 32 sets of materials total for Physical Science, Chemistry, and Physics.) We have received feedback from both parents and teachers, and all this feedback will be considered in finalizing the decision on the last day.
    • We displayed and shared all the materials at the Quarterly Citywide PTSA Meeting on Feb. 7th and encouraged their members to review the materials.
