    SEA CERTIFICATED AND CLASSIFIED LONG-TERM LEAVE WITHOUT PAY GUIDELINES

    Applications for Long-Term Leaves during the 2018-2019 School Year will be accepted beginning January 2, 2018

    GOAL The goal of this leave is to permit certificated and classified employees to engage in a leave that may contribute to personal and/or professional growth.

    OBJECTIVE
    The objective of the program is to afford current certificated and classified employees the opportunity for personal and/or professional growth. Human Resources may grant long term leaves without pay to certificated employees who have a continuing contract and classified employees assigned to a regular position, who have completed two (2) full years with SPS immediately prior to the leave. Human Resources will not approve more than one (1) year of these types of leave without pay, regardless of whether the leave is less than the employee’s contracted FTE. Exceptions to the one year limitation may be granted for leaves to serve in the Peace Corps or other programs with specific terms, or for childcare. These leaves may be granted for professional growth or education, employment opportunities (other than teaching in another school district, state or foreign country), serving in a public office, study or travel, professional experience or other purposes approved by Human Resources.

    APPLICATION
    Any certificated employee with a continuing contract or classified employee assigned to a regular position with Seattle Public Schools may submit an application for Long-Term Leave Without Pay. The applicant’s principal or immediate supervisor will review the request in relation to the needs of the building or to the needs of the applicant. For a leave during the 2018-2019 school year, an application form must be received in Human Resources no later than 5PM on March 1, 2018. Late applications will be denied. If changes in the application are necessary after March 1, 2018, opportunity will be given to make the changes. The completed application packet must include: A letter from the applicant’s principal or immediate supervisor indicating leave approval and a written applicant statement outlining the nature and scope of the leave request.

    TERMS AND PROCESS
    The District will review the completed application according to the following criteria:
    1. At least two (2) full years of regular or contract service in the Seattle Public Schools as a certificated or classified employee immediately prior to the leave.
    2. Conformance with the general guidelines discussed below.
    Once the District has approved an application, the terms of the Long-Term Leave Without Pay shall be as follows:
    1. Such leaves shall be for a period of one (1) year. Leave for longer than one (1) year will be considered on a case-by-case basis in keeping with the collective bargaining agreement.
    2. The employee will be entitled to a position within the District on the same basis as returnees from other types of unpaid leaves.
      1. The employee shall retain his/her position on the salary schedule.
      2. Accumulated sick leave, retirement, and other benefits are retained, but do not accrue, for the period of leave.
      3. The employee may continue any or all portions of his/her insurance benefit programs via direct monthly payments to the District following written arrangements with the Benefits Helpline.
