The Eagle – Week of October 5

The Eagle

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Back to School Night: Please join us for “Back to School Night” this Tuesday from 6:00-7:00. This is a great opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher, and more importantly to engage with your child in what they are learning, to see their work, and to feel what school looks like for them!

October Attribute of a Changemaker: This month we will be learning about respect. We will have our monthly assembly on Monday, October 12, which will feature PE teacher Barbara Bruecher and her circus arts unicyclists.

Help Olympic View by Completing the Child Nutrition Eligibility and Education (CNEEB) form: Even with free breakfast and lunch for every SPS student, all SPS families are encouraged to complete the CNEEB form. Currently, OV is at 73 percent. CNEEB Form

Why?

  • For every person who qualifies, it gives the school additional funding for our yearly budget.
  • If 35 percent qualify, OV qualifies for Title 1. This gives additional staffing (reading interventionists, tutors, counselor)
  • Title 1 eligibility also opens doors for free field trips, community partnerships, etc.
  • If 40 percent qualify, OV gets lower class sizes.

Don’t think you’ll qualify? No problem. The form now includes an option to “Decline Benefits”. Submitting that response still helps us maintain complete and accurate information. The best data is data that is complete.

Please take a few minutes to complete the form today! CNEEB Form

Individual Picture Day: Picture day will be on Thursday, October 15

Fall Festival: Make sure to save Friday, October 23 on your calendar as our PTA is hosting our Fall Festival between 4:00-7:00 p.m.

Drop Off Safety Reminders: Because of all the congestion at drop-off please do the following:

  • 95th should be one direction, moving east to west (towards the Olympic mountains). Cars moving the other way clog the road.
  • Drop off your student at the “Drop and Dash Zone” in front of Collaboration Station
  • Students should exit the car on the sidewalk side of the car
  • Do not park or get out of the car. This creates backups and causes cars to weave in and out.
  • Please be patient around the roundabout to keep our student crossing guards safe.

This Week’s News

Olympic View Coat Drive

As the colder months are approaching, Olympic View is running a coat drive to ensure every child stays warm this winter.  Your generosity will help provide a cozy layer of warmth for children who may not have adequate winter wear.  Together, we can make a big difference in the lives of our students!

We would love for the coat drive to be fulfilled by the end of October, but we will run the drive until each child that needs a coat has one.  If you would like to purchase elsewhere, feel free.  Just please select a coat of same size and similar color and click “I bought this gift.”  That will remove it from the registry, and you can drop it off or have it shipped to Olympic View.  We are specifically looking for coats that are insulated, hooded, and water resistant.

The prices are regular price, and don’t update with sales.  Please click through to stores for current pricing.

Art Docent Program – First Training is October 6

We hope you will join us as an Olympic View art docent! The art docent program brings art to all of our classrooms with lessons planned, prepared and created by artist in residence Jenny Hellmann.

Docents are parents or community members who volunteer to:

  • Do a one hour training for up to 5 lessons throughout the year,
  • Schedule with a classroom teacher,
  • Teach and lead the art project, and
  • Display the students’ art within the school.

During each training docents learn about an artist, their style of work, the project for the students, and are able to create their own art to better understand the lesson.

The first training session will be Tuesday, October 6 from 8-9 a.m. in the cafeteria.

For more information please check out our Art Docent FAQ.

Author Ben Clanton visits OV – Tuesday, October 13!

Thanks to the success of our Read-a-thon last year, author Ben Clanton will be visiting with our Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders on Tuesday, October 13th.  You may know Ben from his ever-popular Narwhal and Jelly books.  Ben is both an author and illustrator and often engages students by connecting their ideas with his drawings.

OV Library has partnered with Third Place Books to offer six of Ben’s books available for families to purchase.  Ben will sign the books to your student on the day of his visit and students will be able to keep these treasured books.  If you would like to purchase a book, please click on the link to the Third Place Books.  Of course, all Ben Clanton books will also be available for check out in the Olympic View Library.

Thank you for your support.

Fall Festival – October 23

The Olympic View Fall Festival is right around the corner! Get ready to play fun games and win prizes, explore the haunted house, enjoy the cake walk, photo booth, cotton candy, bake-off, and chili cook-off.

This is the one and only opportunity for kids to wear their costumes, so feel free to wear them for the event.

From 4:00–4:30 PM, the Fall Festival will offer sensory-friendly early access for students who benefit from a quieter, less crowded environment. We ask other families to join us beginning at 4:30 PM so that students who need this accommodation can enjoy the festival with reduced crowds and stimulation.

Volunteers are needed to help with setup, cleanup, and running both shifts at the Fall Festival. Older siblings and friends are welcome to help as well, it’s a great way to earn service hours!
