The Eagle Newsletter

The Eagle – Mid-Winter Break Edition

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Mid-winter Break: Just a reminder that this week is mid-winter break, so there will be no school.

Return Devices: Just a reminder that devices were sent home over the break, so please return them fully charged.

Lockdown Drill: Tuesday, February 25, we will be practicing a lockdown drill. Last month, classes practiced by themselves, but it can still be kind of scary for some students. I wanted to share what we do. I will get over the intercom and say “This is a drill/practice. Everyone go into a lockdown. This is a drill/practice.” At that point teachers lock doors/cover windows and then students gather in a corner of the room and remain quiet. This will last for about five minutes. I will then go door to door and release classes from the lockdown.

School Emergency Responses: I wanted to take this opportunity to share the four types of evacuation responses.

  • Evacuation: This is when we have to exit the building such as if there was a fire, gas leak, etc.
  • Reverse evacuation: Students re-enter the building because of some exterior threat such as down power line, lightning, or a general threat in the community
  • Shelter-in-place: This is when we are in a cautionary space such as a bank robbery in the area, but there is no specific threat to the school. Students remain in their classes, but learning continues.
  • Lockdown: This is the most extreme response when there is a direct threat to the school such as an armed intruder.

In partnership,

Mr. Bean (he/him)

Stay Informed During Inclement Weather

If weather conditions make a schedule change necessary, the SPS Communications team will share the schedule change in the following ways.

Families will be notified at approximately 5 a.m. on the morning of a weather event through phone voice messages, emails, and text messages. Updates will also be shared with local media stations, on social media, and the district and school websites.

SPS will notify families if there is a schedule change. Our standard practice is to assume that school buildings are open and buses are running on a regular schedule unless otherwise communicated.

Local Media

  • Local TV stations: KOMO 4, KING 5, KIRO 7, FOX 13
  • Radio: KNWN AM 1000 (formerly KOMO), KIRO 97.3 FM

Managing Phone Calls and Communication Preferences

With the first full week of school under our belts, students are starting to share germs and become sick.

For all illnesses, including COVID, please keep students home if:

  • They have uncontrollable secretions from their eyes or nose
  • They cannot control their cough
  • Their symptoms are improving
  • They are fever, diarrhea, vomit free for at least 24 hours, without the use of medication

COVID testing is no longer required.

We will be hosting a vaccine clinic at Olympic View on October 2, where all childhood vaccines, flu and COVID vaccines will be available at no cost to you.

If you would like to take action sooner, local pharmacies and doctors’ offices have the seasonal flu shot and pediatric COVID vaccines will become available over the next couple weeks.  Adult COVID vaccines are currently available.

Please help keep our community healthy by keeping sick students home, practicing good hand washing, properly covering coughs and sneezes and maintaining vaccinations for preventable illness.

Thank you,

Nurse Angie
