The Eagle – Week of February 10
Letter from Principal Bean
Dear Families,
Auction: I want to give a shoutout to all the volunteers who put in countless hours to make the auction happen. A huge shoutout goes to Jeremy Behrens, Chelsea Whittle, Amanda Crosley, and Sabrina O’Brien for leading the event!
Return Devices: Just a reminder that devices were sent home over the weekend, so please return them on Monday. Also, as a reminder, moving forward, any remote learning day will start at 7:55 a.m.
February Changemaker Virtue: This month we are focusing on the idea of “teamwork.”
Changemaker Assembly: This month’s Changemaker Assembly is being moved to this Wednesday, February 11 at 8:10 a.m.
Spirit Day: We will have Monochromatic Day on Wednesday. Students are encouraged to dress all in one color!
Global Reading Challenge: We had our annual Global Reading Challenge contest last Tuesday. We had almost 50 fourth and fifth graders participate this year. Each team read 5 books, and the local King County Librarian came and ran the trivia contest. Congratulations to the Reading River Otters, who won the contest and will participate in the city semi-finals in a couple of weeks at the downtown library. Pictured below are Eva Burkett, Natalie Wu, Emory Doxey, Elsa Huneryager, Alice Rough, Bella Sanyu, and Chessie Cooper.

Black History Month: This past week, OV really celebrated Black Lives Matter. We are going to continue to celebrate black history month, by learning about young black changemakers. Each class will dive deeper into three of the following changemakers, understand how they use teamwork, and reflect on how they can be changemakers themselves.
- Jaylen Arnold
- Robby Novack
- Isra Hirsi
- Jahkil Jackson
- Zaila Avant-Garde
- Toni Harris
- Marley Dias
- Amariyanna Copeny
- Alexis Ohanian
- Yara Shahidi
- Destiny Watson
- Aiyana Ma’at
- Xavier Jones
- Mikaila Ulmer
Mid-winter Break: Just a reminder that the following week (February 16-20) is mid-winter break, so there will be no school.
Immigration: I just wanted to let the community know that under no circumstances will I let immigration officers into the school building or share any personal information. If someone does come, I will refuse entry, collect any information, and deliver it to our Superintendent and our legal department. To learn more please visit Here.
Upcoming School Levies: State, local, and federal dollars fund school districts. There continues to be a disparity between what the state funds for education and what it costs Seattle Public Schools (SPS) to serve our students. So, every three years, the district asks voters to consider renewing expiring levies.
The district is asking voters to consider renewing two levies in the Feb. 11 election.
- Proposition 1 – The Educational Programs & Operations (EP&O) Levy continues funding for areas like student transportation, support staff, meals, special education, and student opportunities like athletics, music and art.
- Proposition 2 – The Building Excellence VI (BEX VI) Levy focuses on maintaining and improving school facilities. It funds renovation, repair and replacement of schools, as well as repairs to roofs, HVAC systems, and playgrounds. The capital levy also funds 90 percent of the district’s technology budget.
Ballots for the levy renewals will be mailed around Jan. 22 and are due to King County Elections by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11. Visit the SPS website to learn more about what the levies fund.
In partnership,
Mr. Bean (he/him)

- Classes have started their third Art Docent project of the year, based on the works of contemporary American artist Polly Apfelbaum. Students work will be displayed at Arts Night.
- The OV Land Acknowledgment mural with artist Roger Fernandes is in the works with dates to be announced soon.
Stay Informed During Inclement Weather
If weather conditions make a schedule change necessary, the SPS Communications team will share the schedule change in the following ways.
Families will be notified at approximately 5 a.m. on the morning of a weather event through phone voice messages, emails, and text messages. Updates will also be shared with local media stations, on social media, and the district and school websites.
SPS will notify families if there is a schedule change. Our standard practice is to assume that school buildings are open and buses are running on a regular schedule unless otherwise communicated.
