Dear Families,
Black Lives Matter in Schools: Next week we will be celebrating Black Lives Matter week. Your child’s teacher will be sharing more specifics! You can show your support by grabbing a Black Lives Matter bracelet in the office.

Potential Snow Day/Computer Devices: As you know, OV sent computer devices home with students on Friday because of the potential for snow and ice. If the roads are too dangerous for school on Monday, we will have remote learning that day. If this happens, it will be a two-hour late start, meaning school will start at 9:55 a.m. Please be on the lookout for communications from your child’s teacher about logging in. (Note: Any further remote learning days would start at the regular time of 7:55)
Immigration-I just wanted to let the community know that under no circumstances will I let immigration officers into the school building or share any personal information. If someone does come, I will refuse entry, collect any information, and deliver it to our Superintendent and our legal department. Learn more about Immigration and SPS
Auction: Just a reminder that the OVPTA Auction, the Emerald City Extravaganza, is this Saturday, February 8, 6:00pm, at the Lake City Way Eagles! Buy your tickets here. You do not need to be present at the auction to bid on items, and registration to bid is free.
Kraken 5th Grade Portraits: Our new incredible art teacher Alan De la Cruz created a fun art project in partnership with the Seattle Kraken. Each student drew a portrait of a Kraken hockey player using a grid. At a recent Kraken game, the following video was shown on the scoreboard, where Kraken players were trying to identify who the portraits resembled. OV 5th Grade Artists Featured at Kraken Game
Reading with Rover: I wanted to share an amazing new program we have thanks to our amazing Librarian Kristi Leland called “Reading with Rover.” Every week a therapy dog comes to the library and students get to read to the dog!
Lost and Found: Our lost and found shelf is getting really full. Please come find your child’s belongings before they get donated! As a reminder, it always helps if you put your child’s name on the coat!!
Safety Help – Securing our Building: If you come to visit the school during the day, always ring the bell. Please do not follow another family if they rang the bell first. Also, please do not hold the door open to other people if you are leaving. All visitors and volunteers need to check in at the office and wear a visitor or volunteer badge while in the building.

Upcoming School Levies: State, local, and federal dollars fund school districts. There continues to be a disparity between what the state funds for education and what it costs Seattle Public Schools (SPS) to serve our students. So, every three years, the district asks voters to consider renewing expiring levies.
The district is asking voters to consider renewing two levies in the Feb. 11 election.
- Proposition 1 – The Educational Programs & Operations (EP&O) Levy continues funding for areas like student transportation, support staff, meals, special education, and student opportunities like athletics, music and art.
- Proposition 2 – The Building Excellence VI (BEX VI) Levy focuses on maintaining and improving school facilities. It funds renovation, repair and replacement of schools, as well as repairs to roofs, HVAC systems, and playgrounds. The capital levy also funds 90 percent of the district’s technology budget.
Ballots for the levy renewals will be mailed around Jan. 22 and are due to King County Elections by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11. Visit the SPS website to learn more about what the levies fund.

Annual English Language Testing to Begin 2/3
All multilingual students (MLs) will be taking the WIDA Access English test in small groups between February 3 and March 21. Students do not need to study for this test; it is a way for them to show their progress in listening, reading, writing, and speaking English each year. Global Reading Challenge Competition, 2/4
For the past few months, several 4th and 5th graders have been participating in our Global Reading Challenge program put on in partnership with the Seattle Public Library. It is finally that time when our teams will compete to see which group of 4th and 5th graders will represent Olympic View at the semi-final round later this spring.
Our in-school competition will take place on Tuesday, February 4 from 9-10:00 a.m. in the cafeteria. Parents are invited to join us by watching the competition.

MLL Family Coffee & Conversation
Our next MLL Family Coffee & Conversation event will be Friday, February 7 from 8-8:30 a.m. in Room 205. Stop by after drop-off to meet Ms. Modi, Ms. Nancy, Mr. Noel, and Ms. Shukri and discuss what is going on at school. There will be coffee and breakfast snacks as well as Spanish and Somali interpretation. Hope to see you there!

Olympic View PTA presents: Emerald City Extravaganza – A Flying Forward Auction
When: Saturday, February 8, 6-9 p.m.
Where: Lake City Way Eagles (8201 Lake City Way NE)
Emerald City Extravaganza Tickets on sale now! Each ticket includes two drink tickets and dinner. Ticket sales end on Friday, February 7. (Tickets will not be sold at the door.)
Online Auction will go live on February 2 at noon. Can’t attend the auction? Register to bid!
Childcare Available! Childcare is available for auction attendees, from 5:30-9:30 p.m., at Collaboration Station. Cost is $30 for the first child, $25 for each additional child. Children must be potty trained. Reserve your spot by contacting Erin at collaborationstation@aol.com.
We are looking for people to volunteer for setup before the auction and help with raffle sales during the auction. Sign up for auction help.
Arts at OV in Late Winter
We have a number of arts activities coming up at OV in February and March!
- Our monthly Wonderful Wednesdays art project during lunch recess will be taking place the week after mid-winter, February 26th. We need MORE volunteers for this project, which will be displayed at Arts Night. Volunteer Sign-Up
- Arts Night will be on Wednesday, March 19 from 4:30-6:30p.m. at school. The event planning committee is asking families who are interested in sharing their arts or crafts to host a table during the event. We will support you to help create a project for kids, materials and volunteers. Please send your proposal to: enrichment@ovpta.org. Look for event volunteer sign up later this month.
- Classes have started their third Art Docent project of the year, based on the works of contemporary American artist Polly Apfelbaum. Students work will be displayed at Arts Night.
- The OV Land Acknowledgment mural with artist Roger Fernandes is in the works with dates to be announced soon.

Membership strengthens the voice of our community, helps support the WA State and National PTAs, and allows you to vote on OV PTA matters, including how to spend the money we fundraise. Scholarships are available, if you need one.
