The Eagle – Week of June 2

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Field Day on Friday: Field Day is this Friday, June 6. For a successful Field Day, your student:

  • Should have a water bottle
  • Apply sunscreen at home
  • Dress for the activity (covered shoes)
  • Wear their Move-A-Thon shirt from this year 2025

June Changemaker Assembly: On Monday, we have our Attribute of a Changemaker assembly. Our theme for the month is “reflection”. In addition, we will feature performances by our 5th grade instrumental music students.

Spirit Day on Wednesday: The theme for spirit day this month is to wear anything with animals.

Celebrating Pride Month at Olympic View: June is Pride Month — a special time to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, their history, diversity, and the ongoing journey toward equality and acceptance. At Olympic View, we embrace this opportunity to foster a welcoming environment for everyone, where every student and staff member feels safe, valued, and free to be themselves.

General PTA Meeting: The last general PTA meeting of the year will be this Tuesday, June 3 in the cafeteria.

Field Trip Chaperones: There are many field trips the last few weeks. If you plan on volunteering, please make sure you have submitted your volunteer paperwork. If you wait until the last moment, you won’t be approved.

In partnership,

Mr. Bean (he/him)

Olympic View Field Day is this Friday, June 6!

Field Day is coming up, and we are so excited! Field Day will be held on Friday, June 6, starting with lunch and moving into the afternoon outdoor activities with 16 stations.

To make this day successful, we need volunteers who can help make this a day to remember for all our students. We need lots of sidewalk chalk, lunch helpers, and volunteers to help run the Field Day stations. All students will get a free lunch if they choose to have the lunch offered.

This is such a great time for our Olympic View Community to join in on the fun! Please volunteer and help make one of our favorite days a success. See you there!

All volunteers must be registered with Seattle Public Schools. To update your volunteer status for this year or to complete your volunteer application, go to the SPS Volunteer web page.

Please contact Kristel Gonzales at k.linnes@gmail.com, Chad Cabigting at chad.cabigting@gmail.com or Mrs. Bruecher at bhbruecher@seattleschools.org with any questions.

Final MLL Family Coffee & Conversation June 6

Our final MLL Family Coffee & Conversation event of the year will be Friday, June 6 from 8-8:30 AM in Room 205. Stop by after drop-off to meet Ms. Modi, Ms. Nancy, Mr. Noel, and Ms. Shukri and discuss ways to support your student’s learning during the summer! There will be coffee and breakfast snacks as well as Spanish and Somali interpretation. Hope to see you there!

End of the Year Library News!

With the end of the year closing in on us, here are a few notes and resources for our readers.

Library books due June 6

All library books are due back to our library this coming Friday, June 6. Please help your child return any missing or overdue library books. If your child has any lost books, please contact Mrs. Leland at klleland@seattleschools.org to discuss options for paying or replacing lost items.

Students with all books turned in and fines cleared by June 17 will receive a coupon to Ben & Jerry’s Greenlake location for free ice cream.

Summer Reading

Summer is a great time to read! This week your child will bring home a list of book suggestions created by the NE Seattle Public School Librarians. These are fantastic suggestions that you can access at the Seattle Public Library over the summer. 5th grade students will also receive the Summer Reading Challenge from the Jane Addams Middle School Library. Copies of these resources will also be put on our school website.

Summer Reading Programs

Seattle Public Library will meet with our students before the end of the year to share the summer reading program. Please take a minute to swing into the Seattle Public Library to join the SPL Summer of Learning program.

The University of Washington is also doing a fun reading promotion called Real DAWGS Read. Students who read 20 minutes per day for 30 minutes can submit their time on a reading log to earn a UW beanie, baseball hat, or backpack.  More information about Read DAWGS Read

Thank you to all of our volunteers this year!

The time and dedication you put into our school, students, staff, and community helps us grow in so many ways. We appreciate you! This year we gave out multiple awards during our Volunteer Appreciation Assembly. Congratulations to each of the recipients.

Ada Snyder AwardCathy Villanueva

Ms. V is an Olympic View retiree that has come back to volunteer each week. One of the people that nominated her said “She is an expert in reading instruction and has been working with some of our emergent readers one-on-one. She makes students feel special and helps them develop a love of learning. We are SO grateful for her!!!”

Golden Acorn AwardChad and Megan Cabigting

Chad and Megan are 5th grade parents that have been volunteering at Olympic View for many years. One of the people that nominated them said “If you’re at an OV event, one of them is there. Friendly, generous, and hard-working both have given so much of themselves to the community and have left OV a better place for it.”

Lifetime Olympic View Elementary (LOVE) AwardKristin Schwab and Jean Nelson

Both of these teachers are retiring this year. Ms. Nelson has been at OV for over 20 years and Ms. Schwab has been at OV for over 15 years. One person that nominated them said “Both Kristin and Jean have been at OV for ages and are always willing to help and go the extra mile for everyone that they meet and encounter. They are going to be so missed by staff, families, and the kids.”

Additionally, a new award was created this year. This award was created for a staff member that gives it their all. Someone that shows up on those spirit days decked out, someone that is always our biggest cheerleader, someone that when you need a pick me up you can go to them, someone that will always have you look at the bigger picture and find the good in it, even when it’s really hard to be positive. The Sparkling Eagle – Rachel Roosma Spirited Staff Award was created for and given to Ms. Roosma this year.

With the first full week of school under our belts, students are starting to share germs and become sick.

For all illnesses, including COVID, please keep students home if:

  • They have uncontrollable secretions from their eyes or nose
  • They cannot control their cough
  • Their symptoms are improving
  • They are fever, diarrhea, vomit free for at least 24 hours, without the use of medication

COVID testing is no longer required.

We will be hosting a vaccine clinic at Olympic View on October 2, where all childhood vaccines, flu and COVID vaccines will be available at no cost to you.

If you would like to take action sooner, local pharmacies and doctors’ offices have the seasonal flu shot and pediatric COVID vaccines will become available over the next couple weeks.  Adult COVID vaccines are currently available.

Please help keep our community healthy by keeping sick students home, practicing good hand washing, properly covering coughs and sneezes and maintaining vaccinations for preventable illness.
