The Eagle – Week of May 19
The Eagle – Week of May 19
Letter from Principal Bean
Dear Families,
Hootenanny was a Blast! It was so much fun on Friday evening watching the amazing talents our students have. Thank you again Sabrina and Austin for putting on such an amazing event.
Land Acknowledgement Art Installation Project: In previous newsletters, I announced the huge Native American Land Acknowledgement Art Installation Project. Native American artist/storyteller Roger Fernandes designed the outlines for the paintings while collaborating with our Native American affinity group. This week OV students will each be able to paint a portion of the painting in art class with Mr. De la Cruz!
Busy Weekend for OV Students: This weekend, we had a couple big events highlighting weeks of hard work for our Unicyclists and Girls on the Run participants! Way to represent OV!
- Saturday: Ms. Bruecher’s unicyclists performed at the Norwegian Constitution Day Parade in Ballard!
- Sunday: Ms. Cooley’s Girls on the Run crew ran their 5K race!
Staffing Updates: I wanted to take the opportunity to announce a few staffing updates. First, I want to give a shout out and a big thank you to the following teachers who are retiring: Jean Nelson, Kristin Schwab, and Cindy Weiser Kornbluh. I am also sad to announce that our amazing art teacher Alan De la Cruz has accepted a full-time position at another school. He absolutely loved OV but couldn’t pass up the possibility of being at one school.
Even though we are losing some amazing staff, I am thrilled with our new hires. I would like to welcome Don Thomas (2nd grade), Nera Beardsley (Special Education), and Lauren Kent (Instructional Assistant) to Olympic View. We will be interviewing for music in about a week.
Free Meals Next Year: I am excited to announce that with our Title 1 status, Olympic View will continue to offer free breakfast/lunch for any student who wants it.
Volunteer Appreciation: We will be having our annual Volunteer Appreciation Assembly on Wednesday, May 28 at 8:10. I hope to see you all there!
Students Not Attending Next Year: Current resident students who will not be returning full time to Seattle Public Schools in September 2025 will need to fill out the Not Attending Next Year Form.
State Testing Continues for 5th Grade: Fifth Grade will be doing the math portion of the SBA testing this week. Please see the schedule below to help you know which weeks to try to avoid any appointments.
- May 19-23: Fifth grade math
- May 27-30: Third grade math
In partnership,
Mr. Bean (he/him)

Town Hall Seattle featuring Roger Fernandes May 22
Thursday, May 22, 2025 at 7:30 PM
The Wyncote Northwest Forum
The Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Washington hosts an annual literary and storytelling series, Sacred Breath, featuring Indigenous writers and storytellers who share their craft at the beautiful wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ Intellectual House on the UW Seattle campus. Storytelling offers a spiritual connection, a sharing of sacred breath. Literature, similarly, preserves human experience and ideals. Both forms are durable and transmit power that teaches us how to live. Both storytelling and reading aloud can impact audiences through the power of presence, allowing for the experience of the transfer of sacred breath as audiences are immersed in the experience of being inside stories and works of literature.
After a delightful event with author Arigon Starr in March, The Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Washington returns to Town Hall Seattle for another evening of storytelling, reading, and sharing with novelist and storyteller Roger Fernandes.
Tickets to this event are free for ages 22 and under.
Volunteers: Thank you for helping our students grow! May 28
We invite you to our Volunteer Recognition Assembly and Reception! All year long, you selflessly dedicate time to our school and we want to celebrate each of you!
Each year we recognize those volunteers who have gone above and beyond for our Olympic View Community. Nominations are being accepted for the following awards:
- Ada Snyder Award: An award given to a senior citizen to recognize their service to the Olympic View community.
- Golden Acorn Award: An award presented to a volunteer in recognition of their dedication and outstanding service to the youth in the Olympic View community. This person will likely have donated their time in multiple classrooms and have helped many OV staff and students. It is to recognize volunteer service “above and beyond” a particular job description.
- L.O.V.E. Award: The Lifetime Olympic View Elementary Award. An award recognizing individuals who have given countless hours of time to Olympic View, whether it be in classrooms, the office, the building, the neighborhood, etc. This would be someone who has gone beyond the normal scope of their job to enhance the entire community at Olympic View. This could be a teacher, staff member, volunteer, student, etc.
Please join us on Wednesday, May 28 at 8:10 a.m. in the cafeteria for our assembly, with a reception immediately to follow.
Jane Addams Middle School PTSA Opportunities
Do you have a 5th grader (rising 6th grader) this year headed to Jane Addams Middle School (JAMS) in the fall? Would you like to help support JAMS students? Have you ever considered getting more involved with the PTSA? The JAMS Parent Student Teacher Association (PTSA) is currently seeking candidates to serve on its board.
Open roles including formal elected positions to non-elected appointed committee leads. There is space for all families to participate. Major activities include connecting members, fundraising, deciding how best to allocate funds to support students, figuring out ways to support various school events and programs, and promoting upcoming events and activities.
Olympic View Field Day is Friday, June 6!
Field Day is coming up, and we are so excited! Field Day will be held on Friday, June 6, starting with lunch and moving into the afternoon outdoor activities with 16 stations. To make this day successful, we need volunteers who can help make this a day to remember for all our students. We need lots of sidewalk chalk, lunch helpers, and volunteers to help run the Field Day stations. All students will get a free lunch if they choose to have the lunch offered.
This is such a great time for our Olympic View Community to join in on the fun! Please volunteer and help make one of our favorite days a success. See you there!
All volunteers must be registered with Seattle Public Schools. To update your volunteer status for this year or to complete your volunteer application, go to the SPS Volunteer web page.
Please contact Kristel Gonzales at k.linnes@gmail.com, Chad Cabigting at chad.cabigting@gmail.com or Mrs. Bruecher at bhbruecher@seattleschools.org with any questions.
OVPTA seeks the future of PTA Leadership!
We’re sad to see a lot of our current volunteers graduating soon – are you ready to step in and give back to OV by joining the PTA Board? We want to ensure that all your favorite OV activities continue on!
Volunteering on the PTA Board is a great way to get to know your OV community and be a part of making OV the amazing place we love so much!! Our Board meets monthly and is supportive and friendly!! We can usually arrange childcare so you can attend a meeting, and we usually offer a virtual meeting option, if you just can’t make it in person. We want to make it easy to be a part of the Board – so let us know what you need!
Look for info in upcoming Eagle newsletters on board recruitment events or just reach out today!
We’re looking to fill the following Board positions: Co-President, Co-Treasurer, Co-Fundraising Director, Co-Activities Director, and Co-Enrichment Director.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Chelsea and Chad at president@ovpta.org and we’re happy to chat!
