The Eagle – Week of November 18

The Eagle – Week of November 18

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Native Heritage Story/Dance Assembly: On Tuesday we will have an assembly featuring Native American storyteller, artist, and educator Roger Fernandez (Lower Elwa Skallam tribe). He is also the artist that will be creating our Land Acknowledge art installation project. I also want to thank the Urban Native Alliance for funding this amazing assembly and for leading the opening and closing songs.

Picture Retake Day: We will have picture retakes on Thursday!

Shout-outs: I wanted to give some shout-outs for some volunteers who have been doing great things!

  • Thanks to Sarah Hartley who has been running the after-school enrichment program.
  • Thanks to Tom Fanelli for putting on Movie Night on Friday.
  • Thanks to Sabrina O’Brien for organizing holiday baskets
  • Kristel Gonzales for organizing Eagle Packs.
  • Thanks to the mountains of volunteers who supported Ms. Bruecher in skating, for our Wonderful Wednesdays art projects, putting Eagle Packs together, volunteering in the classroom or on field trips, and everything else!

Family-Teacher Conferences: As a reminder, there will not be school next week as we will have Family Teacher conferences from November 25-27. Please make sure to sign up.  Here is a link to sign up. Make sure to click on your child’s teacher in the “Select Staff” drop-down menu. Fall Conference Sign-Up

Lost and Found: Please come check lost-and-found for lost clothing. Before winter break, we will donate them. It would be great if you could write your child’s name on the inside of their jackets. This will really increase the odds that the jacket will be returned to your child when they leave it on the playground.

In partnership,

Mr. Bean (he/him)

Neuroscience for Kids

Hello families! I am very interested in neuroscience and neuro-development. I like to talk with students about the brain, to start the conversation that everyone has a unique brain that develops in it’s own way and at its own pace.  Every brain, and thus, every person, is unique.

I’d like to call your attention to a website called “Neuroscience for Kids” that has information, activities, songs, about the brain– for kids of all ages.

There is a feature on this website that may be good for recreation at home—online jigsaw puzzles.

If you do a search for “Neuroscience for Kids” it will come right up on your computer. On the home page, there is a Menu on the left—

“Postcards” is the puzzles. When you click on Postcards, you will get a screen with a number of pictures/puzzles relating to brain and various holidays.

Click on one and it will populate as a puzzle! You can use a touch-screen or a mouse to move the pieces together. [Note, a few puzzles do not populate—If that happens, try another one!] There is a place to “modify” the puzzle where you can change the number of pieces and the color of the background.

Modify and click ok, then the puzzle will go up. Enjoy!

A note from your school nurse

Lice

Families should be checking students head weekly for lice this time of year. Please remind your child to not share hats or jackets with other students.

Illness is among us!

Keep your child home if they have any NEW symptoms or symptoms that are NOT YET IMPROVING.  Kids should not come to school with eye discharge, runny noses that cannot be contained, or coughing that is uncontrollable.  As always, keep students home if they have had fever, vomiting, diarrhea within 24 hours.

Thank you for working as a community to keep our school healthy.

Skating Volunteers- Thank you

By the second and third session the younger students started to find their balance and figured out how to push and glide. The older students found their full balance and are now skating.  The growth and improvement were supported by our volunteers who came in and helped support all students.  Thank you, parents, for coming in and helping.

With the first full week of school under our belts, students are starting to share germs and become sick.

For all illnesses, including COVID, please keep students home if:

  • They have uncontrollable secretions from their eyes or nose
  • They cannot control their cough
  • Their symptoms are improving
  • They are fever, diarrhea, vomit free for at least 24 hours, without the use of medication

COVID testing is no longer required.

We will be hosting a vaccine clinic at Olympic View on October 2, where all childhood vaccines, flu and COVID vaccines will be available at no cost to you.

If you would like to take action sooner, local pharmacies and doctors’ offices have the seasonal flu shot and pediatric COVID vaccines will become available over the next couple weeks.  Adult COVID vaccines are currently available.

Please help keep our community healthy by keeping sick students home, practicing good hand washing, properly covering coughs and sneezes and maintaining vaccinations for preventable illness.

Thank you,

Nurse Angie
