The Eagle – Week of March 17

The Eagle – Week of March 17

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Arts Night on Wednesday: Make sure to save Wednesday, March 19 for our Arts Night event. It will be from 4:30-6:30 in the cafeteria. This will feature live performances by students, staff, and community members. In addition, there will be interactive art activities. Plus, you can see all the student art that is being exhibited.

Native American Land Acknowledgement Art Installation: I am thrilled to announce that Roger Fernandez, a Native American storyteller, artist, and educator (Lower Elwa Skallam tribe) is returning to OV this week. In November he was featured in an assembly as a dancer/storyteller. This week he will be collaborating with students and our art teacher Alan de la Cruz to create our Land Acknowledgement art installation project which will become a feature in our cafeteria for years to come.

Class Photos: Class photos will be on Thursday, April 3. Please don’t make any appointments for that day. It is so sad to see your child listed as “not pictured”.

In partnership,

Mr. Bean (he/him)

This Wednesday, March 19 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. is Arts Night at OV!

To make this community event possible we NEED MORE volunteers or we will have to cut some activities. Please contribute your time when you can on the Volunteer Sign-Up.

Held every other year, Arts Night will take place in the school cafeteria/gym, front hallway, and staff parking lot. There will be performances by students, staff, and members of our community, arts & crafts tables, interactive activities, and an eating area with free pizza.

Interested in sharing any type of arts or crafts you enjoy? We will support you to help create a project for kids, materials and volunteers. Arts Night Proposal Form

Where: Kraken Community IcePlex
When: Thursdays April 3 -May 29 6:45-7:45 a.m.

Club Members will meet before school on Thursdays for some morning exercise and fun.

  • 7-7:30 Ice Skate
  • 7:35 Get off the ice
  • 7:45 School bus to OV!
  • 7:55 Arrive at OV

Morning exercise is great for our bodies and minds, helping us improve our focus at school.  Participants will improve their ice skating skills, confidence, and practice personal responsibility.

This season we will be adding a Morning Workout Challenge, encouraging students to exercise before school to have a more successful school day.

Volunteers Needed! We need a minimum of 3 volunteers for the program to run each day. Volunteer’s job will be to welcome students and check them in, help kids get skates on and off, get them on the bus to school, and most of all be a positive influence!

Note: this is a different than Wednesday “Learn to Skate” program. This program encourages exercise before school as a healthy habit, that leads to success in school.

A Message from Ms. D

It’s been a pleasure to be here as your Counselor since last fall, filling in while Ms. Rho has been on maternity leave. I have enjoyed meeting your children, and drawing pictures with them…watching kindergartners grow strong enough to get across the monkey bars on the playscape, singing Magic Penny with ukelele and 1st graders, reading Simon’s Hook with 2nd through 4th grades  (don’t take the bait!) and having lunch with 5th graders dedicated to chess, sand tray, and many versions of action art.

I have referred to the Neuroscience for Kids website (from University of Washington) for online jigsaw puzzles and endless information, games, songs about brain function, and The Everybody gets Anxious Activity Book for tips on handling worry and stress.

Your Staff, Teachers, and Principals have been wonderful to work with.

I will be back to visit! Happy spring!

OVPTA Surplus Grants for 2024-2025

The PTA Board and membership decided that we can fund some surplus grants this year! Do you have an idea that supports the OVPTA mission and goals, but you need funds to make it happen? Have you identified a need that could be filled using some PTA money? The PTA has designated up to $10,000 to be spent on projects executed by our OV community members. That means YOU, our OV staff and our OV families, can submit a proposal for a project you’ll spearhead! In past years, these mini grants have funded classroom books, equipment upgrades, outdoor projects, and end of year activities. We’ll be trying to prioritize projects that benefit the most OV students and have longevity, but don’t be afraid to submit a proposal for something outside-the-box! Does it make OV even more amazing than it already is? Let’s hear it!

We’ll collect proposals and the PTA Board will approve some (but not all) proposals each month until the end of the year, or until we reach our spending limit. After each board meeting, we’ll let everyone know what we decided.

Don’t be intimidated by the proposal, it is just our process to get the information, it does not have to be a professional-looking grant!

Please email advocacy@ovpta.org with any questions or if you’d like to submit your proposal via paper form.

With the first full week of school under our belts, students are starting to share germs and become sick.

For all illnesses, including COVID, please keep students home if:

  • They have uncontrollable secretions from their eyes or nose
  • They cannot control their cough
  • Their symptoms are improving
  • They are fever, diarrhea, vomit free for at least 24 hours, without the use of medication

COVID testing is no longer required.

We will be hosting a vaccine clinic at Olympic View on October 2, where all childhood vaccines, flu and COVID vaccines will be available at no cost to you.

If you would like to take action sooner, local pharmacies and doctors’ offices have the seasonal flu shot and pediatric COVID vaccines will become available over the next couple weeks.  Adult COVID vaccines are currently available.

Please help keep our community healthy by keeping sick students home, practicing good hand washing, properly covering coughs and sneezes and maintaining vaccinations for preventable illness.

Thank you,

Nurse Angie
