The Eagle – Week of May 26

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Happy Memorial Day: Just a reminder that there is no school tomorrow. I hope you all enjoy the three-day weekend.

Volunteer Appreciation: We will be having our annual Volunteer Appreciation Assembly on Wednesday, May 28 at 8:10 in the cafeteria. After the assembly we will have a reception with coffee and treats in the front hallway. I hope to see you all there!

Land Acknowledgement Art Installation Project: This past week in Mr. De la Cruz’s art class, all students were able to help paint in the mural created by Native American artist/storyteller Roger Fernandes. Below is a picture of some of the tiles, with students from Ms. Cooley’s 3rd grade class working on one canvas. There are 3 canvases that go together to make a panel, and there are four panels in all, so you can see what a huge undertaking this is. I want to give a huge shout out to former OV parents Sarah Wichlacz and Nancy Dautovich for their countless hours of volunteering even though their kids are no longer at our school. It is a testament to our community and our investment in the arts.

1st Grade Pacific Northwest Ballet Performance: For the last few weeks the first graders have been partnering with the PNB for their artist-in-residency project. Their culminating performance will be on Thursday morning at 8:15 in the cafeteria.

Field Day Coming Soon: Field Day is going to be on Friday, June 6. If you would like to volunteer, please scroll down the Eagle to see Ms. Bruecher’s blurb.

Free Meals Next Year: I am excited to announce that with our Title 1 status, Olympic View will continue to offer free breakfast/lunch for any student who wants it.

In partnership,

Mr. Bean (he/him)

This Week’s News

Volunteer Recognition Assembly May 28

Thank you for helping our students grow!

We invite you to our Volunteer Recognition Assembly and Reception! All year long, you selflessly dedicate time to our school and we want to celebrate each of you!

Each year we recognize those volunteers who have gone above and beyond for our Olympic View Community. Nominations are being accepted for the following awards:

  • Ada Snyder Award: An award given to a senior citizen to recognize their service to the Olympic View community.
  • Golden Acorn Award: An award presented to a volunteer in recognition of their dedication and outstanding service to the youth in the Olympic View community. This person will likely have donated their time in multiple classrooms and have helped many OV staff and students. It is to recognize volunteer service “above and beyond” a particular job description.
  • L.O.V.E. Award: The Lifetime Olympic View Elementary Award. An award recognizing individuals who have given countless hours of time to Olympic View, whether it be in classrooms, the office, the building, the neighborhood, etc. This would be someone who has gone beyond the normal scope of their job to enhance the entire community at Olympic View. This could be a teacher, staff member, volunteer, student, etc.

Please join us on Wednesday, May 28 at 8:10 a.m. in the cafeteria for our assembly, with a reception immediately to follow.

Wonderful Wednesday May 28

Wonderful Wednesday, our monthly lunch time art project, is this week May 28. Students will be doing stained glass coloring. This is an easy project for volunteers to help and popular with the kids! Swing by for any amount of time, just come on by or sign-up here.

Ballard Parade Success

Congratulations to all the unicyclist who participated in the Ballard Parade Saturday and navigated the rain and the cold. Riding on wet pavement and navigating asphalt +60 other riders is not something we practiced. I am so proud of each and every rider. I had 6 students riding on the Giraffe, which is a very tall unicycle, and the prerequisite for them to ride in the parade was to idle for at least 2 minutes. The parade was also a huge success because of the parents who showed up to support the experience. I was not able to be there, but Whittier Elementary’s PE Bryan Pule was very welcoming to our riders and made space for them to ride with pride. 18 years strong! I continue to be so grateful for the Olympic View community!

Mahalo,

Mrs. Bruecher

Major activities include connecting members, fundraising, deciding how best to allocate funds to support students, figuring out ways to support various school events and programs, and promoting upcoming events and activities.

Olympic View Field Day is Friday, June 6!

Field Day is coming up, and we are so excited! Field Day will be held on Friday, June 6, starting with lunch and moving into the afternoon outdoor activities with 16 stations. To make this day successful, we need volunteers who can help make this a day to remember for all our students. We need lots of sidewalk chalk, lunch helpers, and volunteers to help run the Field Day stations. All students will get a free lunch if they choose to have the lunch offered.

This is such a great time for our Olympic View Community to join in on the fun! Please volunteer and help make one of our favorite days a success. See you there!

All volunteers must be registered with Seattle Public Schools. To update your volunteer status for this year or to complete your volunteer application, go to the SPS Volunteer web page.

Please contact Kristel Gonzales at k.linnes@gmail.com, Chad Cabigting at chad.cabigting@gmail.com or Mrs. Bruecher at bhbruecher@seattleschools.org with any questions.

With the first full week of school under our belts, students are starting to share germs and become sick.

For all illnesses, including COVID, please keep students home if:

  • They have uncontrollable secretions from their eyes or nose
  • They cannot control their cough
  • Their symptoms are improving
  • They are fever, diarrhea, vomit free for at least 24 hours, without the use of medication

COVID testing is no longer required.

We will be hosting a vaccine clinic at Olympic View on October 2, where all childhood vaccines, flu and COVID vaccines will be available at no cost to you.

If you would like to take action sooner, local pharmacies and doctors’ offices have the seasonal flu shot and pediatric COVID vaccines will become available over the next couple weeks.  Adult COVID vaccines are currently available.

Please help keep our community healthy by keeping sick students home, practicing good hand washing, properly covering coughs and sneezes and maintaining vaccinations for preventable illness.
