The Eagle – Winter Break Edition

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

As we approach the holiday season, I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for your hard work and collaboration this year. Your support and dedication truly make a difference in our school community.

I hope you have a safe and enjoyable holiday, filled with precious moments spent with friends and family. Let’s continue to inspire our students together in the coming year!

Reminder to Return Devices/Chargers: On Friday, we sent iPads/computers home with each student in case we had to change to remote learning due to snowy/icy weather. Please return them when the break ends (with the chargers!)

Remote Learning if Schools are Closed Due to Inclement Weather: If schools end up being closed because of inclement weather, we will do school remotely, similar to what happened during Covid. Your child’s teacher sent home communication on how to log on. Note: The first day of a school closure will likely be a 2-hour late start. This will allow teachers to plan and communicate with families about logging in and what the day’s agenda will be. Every day after that would start at the normal start time.

Progress Reports: Progress reports are now available on the Source. Directions on how to access the Source can be found at this link.

January Attribute of a Changemaker: In January we will all be focusing on the idea of gratitude.

Social-Emotional Learning: All classes at Olympic View are using the Second Step Social-Emotional Learning/Anti-bullying curriculum. We are all in our second unit called Emotion Management. In this unit, students learn how to identify emotions in themselves and others and apply strategies to manage their emotions. As students move up in grades these skills get more advanced.

School Starts at 7:55: Please make sure to get your child to school on time. When they walk in with the classroom from the playground, they feel so much more connected with their peers. Kids really thrive on a sense of belonging as well as routine and predictability.

In partnership,

Mr. Bean (he/him)

Congratulations to our 3rd through 5th grade choir students who have been hard at work learning the song “If I Were a Fish.” This upbeat and quirky song talks about the joy of you being you, and me being me!

Fourth Grade Ukulele Volunteers Needed

I am looking for 4-6 volunteers in each fourth-grade classroom to come in once per week and help with our upcoming ukulele unit after the new year! Volunteers will be:

  • Monitoring groups of 4-5 students during full group instruction and small group practice
  • Helping students with trouble shooting small problems such as pressing their fingers down, finding the correct finger placement, and strumming

No previous ukulele or music experience is necessary! Please email me at okhelbach@seattleschools.org if interested.

A Note from Nurse Angie

I hope you are all enjoying the break from school.  Please be mindful when gathering, celebrating, and returning to school that many illnesses in our community right now are very contagious and can be very dangerous for some people.  If you have not gotten your flu shot, the flu this season is very severe and is lasting more than a week for some people.  It is also leading to other infections, such as pneumonia.  Be mindful that all illness is stressful on the body and does require increased rest.

When returning to school on January 6, please make sure that your child:

  • Must be fever, diarrhea, vomiting free for 24 hours, without using medication.
  • Should not come to school with new or worsening cough or congestion.
  • Will stay home if they have uncontrolled coughing or runny nose.
  • Needs time to recover after illnesses. Staying home to rest will help them heal much faster.
  • Should not come to school if they have yellow or green discharge coming from their eyes or if they have redness around their eye. I have seen a lot of cases of conjunctivitis or pink eye.  This might require antibiotic eye drops to improve.

Finally, continue to check your child’s head for lice all winter season.  Lice are not dangerous but are annoying and can spread to others.

Thank you for helping keep our community safe and healthy during viral season.

With the first full week of school under our belts, students are starting to share germs and become sick.

For all illnesses, including COVID, please keep students home if:

  • They have uncontrollable secretions from their eyes or nose
  • They cannot control their cough
  • Their symptoms are improving
  • They are fever, diarrhea, vomit free for at least 24 hours, without the use of medication

COVID testing is no longer required.

We will be hosting a vaccine clinic at Olympic View on October 2, where all childhood vaccines, flu and COVID vaccines will be available at no cost to you.

If you would like to take action sooner, local pharmacies and doctors’ offices have the seasonal flu shot and pediatric COVID vaccines will become available over the next couple weeks.  Adult COVID vaccines are currently available.

Please help keep our community healthy by keeping sick students home, practicing good hand washing, properly covering coughs and sneezes and maintaining vaccinations for preventable illness.

Thank you,

Nurse Angie
