The Eagle – Week of December 04

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Kindergarten Gingerbread Drama Project: Thanks to the generous support of the PTA, each grade level gets to have a unique artist-in-residence experience. Last week, kindergarten started their annual Gingerbread Drama Project. For the next few weeks, classes are creating and performing their own unique version of the classic “Gingerbread Man” story, by collectively developing their own unique characters/settings/problems and acting out the story. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn about story telling while incorporating drama. They will perform on Friday, December 15 at 8:15 in the cafeteria.

Virtue of the Month: During December, our Changemaker virtue will focus on respect. Third grade will be leading the Virtue Assembly on December 11.

Movie Night: Thank you to the PTA and especially Billy Thompson and Tom Fanelli for putting on another amazing movie night last Friday.

Awesome Field Trips: Last week, grades 3-5 got to go skating at the Kraken Ice Skating Complex. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped. On Monday, the first grade is going to the aquarium. There will be other field trips, so make sure you get your volunteer paperwork in. Kids love it when their family members volunteer for field trips!

Morning Drop Off: Please do not drop off students before 7:40 a.m. because we do not have any staff members on duty to supervise.

Family Income Surveys: So far, I only have 39 percent of families who have responded to the parent income survey. Olympic View receives lots of resources since we are a Title 1 school. Part of the way this is figured out is by families filling out this survey. It only takes a few minutes. The information will only be used to help your school receive funding from state and federal programs. Please follow this link. It is translated into Spanish, Somali, Vietnamese, and Chinese.

Ms. Roosma’s Corner

This is our last week talking about Community. I have issued a challenge to students in this video and I would encourage you to talk with your kiddo about this as well. How does being a part of a community help us to be changemakers? When we dive deeper into this question, it really has to do with being connected with other people. I don’t know about you, but every day that I come to OV, the kids help me to be a better person. I find myself dreaming of what I can do to make things better, to shift my conversations to better support students. Being an active part of different communities gives us so much and I encouraged the students to think about what communities they want to be a part of.  Perhaps you at home can help your kiddo think of communities where your family is already involved?

Volunteer Opportunities

Library Volunteers Wanted

Calling all volunteers!  We are looking for a few parents who would be willing to volunteer in the library. Volunteers will help pick up books from classrooms, check books in, and return books to their shelves.  Occasional special project may also arise throughout the year and your help would be greatly appreciated.

Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)

The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests one. The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week. We need volunteers to help with packing on Friday mornings from about 8:00-9:00 am. If you are able to help during this timeframe, we would be grateful for your help!

We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time. Questions? Contact k.linnes@gmail.com

We also need plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store).  If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.
