Dear Families,
No School on Monday: Just a reminder that there is no school on Monday because we are celebrating the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.
Day of Service: If your family is looking for a way to honor Dr. King through a Day of Service, this link gives lots of opportunities. Learn more about MLK Day of Service
Computer Devices: Devices were sent home with kids over the weekend because there is the possibility of snowy/icy conditions. Please make sure they are charged and return them on Tuesday.
SPS Communication about School Closures: If you are unsure about the status of school closures, go to the SPS District Website for more information.
Multi-Cultural Potluck on Friday from 5:00-7:30 p.m.: This Friday we are continuing our tradition of our Multi-Cultural Night. This fits perfectly into our January theme focusing on the importance of embracing your own identities and learning and respecting other people’s identities. We are encouraging families to share a dish and/or wear clothing that is representative of each family’s identity.
School Tours: We will have two tours, one in-person and one virtual, for incoming families. They are scheduled as follows:
- Thursday, February 1 at 8:30 in the cafeteria
- Wednesday, February 7 at 6:30 virtually Join the meeting
Family Income Survey: This is the last week to fill out the family-income survey. This survey is what the district uses to determine if schools like Olympic View qualify for Title 1 status. If we don’t qualify, we would lose a full-time counselor, our interventionist, and have larger class sizes. Please take a couple minutes to fill this out. It is completely confidential. This month our school has been focusing on the attribute of Identity. Our 1st graders led the assembly and our student teacher in Ms. Fenigsohn’s class worked some technological magic and put this amazing video together. I hope that you are able to pick up on the solid work we are doing on helping our kiddos understand who they are. We are encouraging our kiddos to see themselves as unique individuals. That we all have different identities, we are all as unique as our fingerprint.

This Week’s News
After School Enrichment Winter Session
Winter session begins on Thursday, February 1! We have a great variety of classes this fall including chess, Pokémon club, drama, coding, art, Lego club, music, and more! Classes range in cost from $122 – $282 with full and partial scholarships available.
Registration will open January 16 and close January 26.
Classes run after school for 8 weeks on Thursdays from 2:40-3:40 p.m. Flyers will be distributed via kid mail, or check out our school Facebook page for updates.

Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is coming back to OV this spring! Are you interested in motivating students? Getting regular exercise? Teaching girls life skills (provided by a curriculum)? Being an example? Having fun and being silly? Then you might want to join our coaching team!
Teams are 15 girls, last year we had so much interest that we had 2 teams of 15. That means 5-8 coaches are need. Kids are already asking me about GOTR!
In order to participate with the program you do need to be formally signed up and a background check is completed.
Spring Season Only 8 Weeks This Year! March 25th to the week of May 20th Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-4 p.m.

You can be a coach if you identify as male since we have female coaches. Non-Binary are always welcome! (I’m so glad they have changed their wording at GOTR)
Biking: Volunteers needed for Tuesday, January 30 – Friday, February 9 for 2nd -5th grade students
All students should wear multiple layers. This unit is taught outside, rain or shine. Students who own a helmet should bring it for the unit. Otherwise, bikes and helmets will be provided by Cascade Bicycle Club. Fifth graders are allowed to bring bikes that are well maintained and are the right size. Volunteers will help with getting helmets on, managing skill stations, and helping support the students in the learner area.

An Art Gallery at Olympic View!
O.V. gets to host a very special travelling arts exhibit, sponsored by the Jr. League of Seattle. “Creatures in Art – Wild & Make-Believe” will be on display in Room 212 from Jan. 16-Feb. 9. There are eight artworks that were inspired by the wild animal kingdom by noted Northwest artists Spike Mafford, Alden Mason, Jose Orantes, Glen Alps, Harold Balazs, and Andy Ostheimer.
This series includes a range of mediums including photography, painting, vitreography, drawing, papier-mâché, and cast bronze sculpture. The artworks in the two units Wild and Make-Believe were carefully chosen to inspire students’ critical and creative thinking. Students will have multiple opportunities in their Multi-Arts classes to explore and wonder about the artwork and learn about the artists. Students will also be creating art in response to this exploration. As a Title 1 School, we get to enjoy this amazing collection for free!
A message from Nurse Angie about Immunizations
Immunizations are legally required for students to attend school. Beginning in February 2024, students who are not up to date with their vaccines will not be able to attend school. If your child is unvaccinated for personal or medical reasons, you must have your doctor properly fill out this form and turn it into the school.

Choir is coming to Olympic View Elementary this year!
This opportunity is for third, fourth, and fifth grade students who like to sing, perform, and have fun. In this choir we will be working not only on musical skills, but also lifelong skills such as cooperation/teamwork, patience, perseverance, and growth mindset. The program will run every Tuesday from 2:45-4:00 p.m., beginning on January 23.
Registration will open next week with more details regarding schedules, payment, and more! Scholarships will be available.

Multicultural Potluck Friday, 1/19
5-7:30pm, OV Cafeteria – Everyone is invited, as we get together for a fun night of sharing our favorite and special foods with each other! You are encouraged to bring a dish to share, homemade or store bought, to represent your own cultures and traditions. Flyers will be coming home via Kidmail (or available at the event) so that you can share with us why this food is meaningful to you. We can’t wait to try all the amazing foods! Multicultural Potluck Night – Book Readers Needed
During Multicultural Night, there will be a quiet room where small groups can read to themselves or be read to from culturally diverse books. Would you like to read aloud a book representing your culture? Would you like to read a book aloud in your home language? There will be a selection of culturally diverse books available from the OV library, or you can bring your own from home. Sign up to read a book.
OVPTA Presents Flying Through the Decades – Silent Auction and Fundraising Event!
Tickets are now on sale for our annual auction on February 10th at the Eagles Hall from 6-9pm.

We are looking for services, goods (we have a themed basket for just about anything), tickets to events, or a special big ticket item. NEW: Looking for childcare? Email Erin at collaborationstation@aol.com to reserve a spot. The cost is $30 for the first kid, $25 for siblings and includes activities and dinner and care lasts from 5:30 – 9:30 at OV. Your child does not need to be regularly enrolled in Collaboration Station to participate. 10 kids minimum so please reserve your spot ASAP! (Cancellation policy: Any cancellations must be made at least 48 hours in advance or you will be charged for the spot.)

Volunteer Opportunities
Library Volunteers Wanted
Calling all volunteers! We are looking for a few parents who would be willing to volunteer in the library. Volunteers will help pick up books from classrooms, check books in, and return books to their shelves. Occasional special project may also arise throughout the year and your help would be greatly appreciated.
Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)
The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests one. The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week. We need volunteers to help with packing on Friday mornings from about 8:00-9:00 am. If you are able to help during this timeframe, we would be grateful for your help!
We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time. Questions? Contact k.linnes@gmail.com
We also need plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store). If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.
General Information
Late Arrivals to School
If your student is late (the bell rings at 7:55 a.m.), please drop them off at the NE 95th Street entrance near the flagpole or blacktop. We now have a call box at the 95th Street entrance. After the bell rings at 7:55 a.m., all students must be signed in with office staff. The 8th Ave call box entrance will be used for staff only.
Absences
If your student will not be at school, please email the attendance email olympicview.attendance@seattleschools.org or call 202-252-5504 to let office staff know.
Early Pick Up
Parents/Guardians should come to the 95th Street security call box entrance. We are unable to call students down to the office until you arrive for pick up.
Pick Up Changes
If your student will have an alternate plan for pick up, please contact the office via email olympicview@seattleschools.org, phone 206-252-5500, Talking Points message, or a signed note with your student.
