Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families, 

Multi-Cultural Potluck: The multi-cultural potluck was an amazing success. There were just so many delicious options to choose from. Thanks everyone for sharing a bit about your culture. I also want to give a huge shout out to Arcelia Escobedo, Sarah Wichlacz, Andrea Chaddock, and Nancy Dautovich. 

School Tours: We will have two tours, one in-person and one virtual, for incoming families. They are as followed: 

Title 1 Status: I am excited to announce that it looks like we will again qualify for Title 1 status for next year. Thank you to all the families who filled out the family income survey. Having this designation gives us extra state/federal funding that is used to fund our counselor and interventionist and allows for lower class size.  

Drop-off Reminders: Thankfully, it looks like our icy conditions are on pause, but the rain will be here. With the bad weather comes a huge increase in families driving to school. It becomes a huge safety concern when there is a backlog of cars on 95th. Here is how you can help! 

  • Say your goodbyes and have your kids ready to get out before the drop-off zone! 
  • Students should get out immediately on the passenger side. Make it a goal to be in and out in 30 seconds. This keeps the traffic flowing. 
  • We encourage drivers to keep 95th one-way by only heading west towards 5th Avenue NE during this busy time of day. No U-turns please as this is unsafe and causes traffic jams.

Lost and Found

All items in our lost and found and on our playground that have not been claimed will be donated on February 1. Please have your students look around for any missing items.

After School Enrichment Registration

Only one more week to register! Winter session begins on Thursday, February 1! We have a great variety of classes this fall including chess, Pokémon club, drama, coding, art, Lego club, music, and more! Classes range in cost from $122 – $282 with full and partial scholarships available.

Registration will open January 16 and close January 26. 

Classes run after school for 8 weeks on Thursdays from 2:40-3:40 p.m. Flyers were distributed via kid mail last week.

Choir is here at Olympic View Elementary!

This opportunity is for third, fourth, and fifth grade students who like to sing, perform, and have fun. We will be coming together as a community to build our musical, teamwork, and growth mindset skills through singing songs and playing musical games and activities.

Winter Session will run every Tuesday from January 23 until April 2. Rehearsals will go from 2:45-4:00 p.m. and will take place at Olympic View Elementary in Portable 2 (Ms. Helbach’s classroom). The fee for the course will be $100/student with scholarships available. 

Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run is coming back to OV this spring! Are you interested in motivating students? Getting regular exercise? Teaching girls life skills (provided by a curriculum)? Being an example? Having fun and being silly? Then you might want to join our coaching team!

Teams are 15 girls, last year we had so much interest that we had 2 teams of 15. That means 5-8 coaches are need. Kids are already asking me about GOTR!

In order to participate with the program you do need to be formally signed up and a background check is completed.

Spring Season Only 8 weeks this year! March 25th  to the week of May 20th Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-4 p.m.

You can be a coach if you identify as male since we have female coaches. Non-Binary are always welcome! (I’m so glad they have changed their wording at GOTR)

Biking: Volunteers needed for Tuesday, January 30 – Friday, February 9 for 2nd -5th grade students

All students should wear multiple layers.  This unit is taught outside, rain or shine.  Students who own a helmet should bring it for the unit. Otherwise, bikes and helmets will be provided by Cascade Bicycle Club.  Fifth graders are allowed to bring bikes that are well maintained and are the right size. Volunteers will help with getting helmets on, managing skill stations, and helping support the students in the learner area.

Global Reading Challenge In School Competition

For the past several months, our 4th and 5th graders have been preparing for the Global Reading Challenge.  Students have been reading a variety of different books, cooperating with others in teams, and memorizing facts about each book in preparation for our in-school competition. This year our competition will be held on Tuesday, February 6th from 9:00-10:00am, in the OV lunchroom. Parents, we’d love for you to join us on that date.

OVPTA Presents Flying Through the Decades – Silent Auction and Fund Raising Event!

Tickets are now on sale for our annual auction on February 10th at the Eagles Hall from 6-9pm.

We are looking for services, goods (we have a themed basket for just about anything), tickets to events, or a special big ticket item. Email fundraising@ovpta.org with donations or drop off at the front office. 

Not going to make the event on the 10th? You can still bid and win! Use the ticket link to create a bidder profile. 

NEW: Looking for childcare? Email Erin at collaborationstation@aol.com to reserve a spot. The cost is $30 for the first kid, $25 for siblings and includes activities and dinner and care lasts from 5:30 – 9:30 at OV. Your child does not need to be regularly enrolled in Collaboration Station to participate. 10 kids minimum so please reserve your spot ASAP! (Cancellation policy: Any cancellations must be made at least 48 hours in advance or you will be charged for the spot.)

Volunteer Opportunities

Library Volunteers Wanted

Calling all volunteers!  We are looking for a few parents who would be willing to volunteer in the library. Volunteers will help pick up books from classrooms, check books in, and return books to their shelves.  Occasional special project may also arise throughout the year and your help would be greatly appreciated.

Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)

The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests one. The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week. We need volunteers to help with packing on Friday mornings from about 8:00-9:00 am. If you are able to help during this timeframe, we would be grateful for your help!

We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time. Questions? Contact k.linnes@gmail.com  

We also need plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store).  If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.

General Information

Late Arrivals to School

If your student is late (the bell rings at 7:55 a.m.), please drop them off at the NE 95th Street entrance near the flagpole or blacktop. We now have a call box at the 95th Street entrance. After the bell rings at 7:55 a.m., all students must be signed in with office staff. The 8th Ave call box entrance will be used for staff only.

Absences

If your student will not be at school, please email the attendance email olympicview.attendance@seattleschools.org or call 202-252-5504 to let office staff know.

Early Pick Up

Parents/Guardians should come to the 95th Street security call box entrance. We are unable to call students down to the office until you arrive for pick up.

Pick Up Changes

If your student will have an alternate plan for pick up, please contact the office via email olympicview@seattleschools.org, phone 206-252-5500, Talking Points message, or a signed note with your student.
