The Eagle – Week of November 12

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Veterans Day Assembly: We had an amazing Veterans Day Assembly on Thursday. We had a guest speaker, Alan Goto, who shared how his career of becoming a firefighter began with his experience serving in the army. The assembly included four fourth grade students (Eloise Drinan, Eva Burkett, Annika Birnie, and Brook Stevenson) sharing stories about family members who served in the military. A former OV parent, Cristin Miller, opened up the assembly by singing a beautiful rendition of the national anthem. The highlight for many was the slide show which included the dozens of photos of family members who served in the military as beautiful music played (Ray Charles’s version of “America the Beautiful!”)

Rescheduled Operation Warm on Wednesday: There was a delay in shipping many of the items, so we will have our Operation Warm event this Wednesday, November 15. All students will be receiving a new jacket, hat, gloves, backpack, and a book. And K-3 students will also get a new pair of shoes.

Donating Items from Operation Warm: All students will be participating in the Operation Warm event. If there are items your child does not need, you can donate them. Our counselor, Joyce Rho, will have boxes to place items in. We are partnering with Sandpoint Elementary and will give them all of our extra items.

School Virtue Assembly: On Monday we will have our November Virtue of a Changemaker Assembly. This month’s theme is community, and it will feature our second grade!

Spirit Day: This Wednesday is Wacky Hair and Hat Day!

Parent-Teacher conferences: Parent-Teacher conferences will be held from November 20-22 (there is no school during Fall Conferences.)

In Partnership!

Mr. Bean (He/him)

Ms. Roosma’s Corner

This month we have moved onto a new attribute, Community. In this video we watch a clip about what community is and where we can find community all around us. It is an awesome look at how community exists all around us, including in our schools! Ms. Angie, our school nurse; and Ms. Bruecher, our PE teacher also come and share with us what community means to them in the communities they exist in.  I ask the kiddos…what communities are you a part of?  I believe that it is a powerful opportunity to acknowledge and label the communities we are a part of. To talk with each other about what those communities do for us as well as what we bring to the communities.

For a complete collection of Ms. Roosma’s Monday Morning Messages, check out her page on our Olympic View Website: Assistant Principal Rachel Roosma

Thank You to All the Skating Volunteers

I would like to extend a big Mahalo to all the parents and grandparents who came during the 2 week skating unit. The extra help maximized their skating time. This year was a very successful unit for students in grades 1st-5th.  I am very grateful for the Olympic View Community and feel very lucky to be a part of it. The next big unit will be Bowling.

Volunteer Opportunities

Library Volunteers Wanted

Calling all volunteers!  We are looking for a few parents who would be willing to volunteer in the library. Volunteers will help pick up books from classrooms, check books in, and return books to their shelves.  Occasional special project may also arise throughout the year and your help would be greatly appreciated.

Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)

The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests one. The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week. We need volunteers to help with packing on Friday mornings from about 8:00-9:00 am. If you are able to help during this timeframe, we would be grateful for your help!

We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time. Questions? Contact k.linnes@gmail.com

We also need plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store).  If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.
