The Eagle – Week of November 6

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Native American Heritage Month: I am excited to announce that all OV classrooms will be celebrating Native American Heritage Month in November. Learn more about Native American Heritage Month

Operation Warm on Wednesday: As I have announced in previous Eagle newsletters, OV will be participating in Operation Warm this Wednesday. All students will be receiving a new jacket, hat, gloves, backpack, and a book. And K-3 students will also get a new pair of shoes.

Donating Items from Operation Warm: All students will be participating in the Operation Warm event. If there are items that your child does not need, you can donate them. Our counselor, Joyce Rho, will have boxes to place items in. We are partnering with Sandpoint Elementary and will give them all of our extra items.

Veterans Day Assembly: We are having our annual Veterans Day Assembly this Thursday, November 9 at 8:15 AM. I would like to personally invite any family members who are Veterans so we can honor your service!

Veterans Day Observed – No School: Just a reminder that there will be no school on Friday, November 10 in honor of Veterans Day.

November Virtue: Our Changemaker virtue for November will focus on “community”. We will have the virtue assembly a week from Monday, on November 13. Second grade will be featured.

Parent-Teacher conferences: Parent-Teacher conferences will be held from November 20-22 (there is no school during Fall Conferences.)

In Partnership!
Mr. Bean (He/him)

Ms. Roosma’s Corner

Can you believe that we made it to the last week of October? This was our last week of self-control and we hear from a couple of students about how they plan to continue working on self control throughout the year. I also gave a bubble challenge to the teachers…perhaps some of your kiddos got to participate in it. The bubble challenge is this: blow bubbles, let the kids run and play and pop all of them. Then talk about how this next time you want them to not move, not pop them, just watch them fall. I sat in Ms. Abercrombie’s class while she was doing it and only one student got up to pop the bubble! After they go through the second round you talk with the kiddos about how easy/hard it was to not reach out to touch the bubble. We talked about how in the hallway it can be hard/easy to give silent waves to a friend you see passing, or on the playground wanting to play a little bit longer after the bell/whistle. Perhaps you have some connections to self control that would align with home activities. Try it out, see how it goes!

Thanksgiving and Holiday Basket GoFundMe

As the holidays are approaching, we would love to be able to support families in need during the Holidays. We are providing support to our OV families with Thanksgiving and Holiday baskets. To make this possible, we rely on donations from our OV community and beyond. Please donate if you are able to and/or share this link on social media or with friends and family. Thank you so much!

Spring Musical Auditions

On November 9, 3:40 pm in the cafeteria, we will be hosting auditions for the musical. These will be group auditions instead of individual ones, so students do not need to prepare anything for them. 3rd – 5th Grade students are welcome to sign up for auditions (signup is located outside of the cafeteria) and Parent Packets with permission slips are being sent home in Kidmail. If you have any questions please reach out to Jeremy Behrens at jeremy.r.behrens@gmail.com

Global Reading Challenge Started Nov. 1

Global Reading Challenge (GRC) is a trivia style reading competition for 4th and 5th graders sponsored by Seattle Public Libraries.  This year’s GRC titles were revealed to students.  To participate, students must complete and return an application by November 8th.  Applications can be picked up outside the library.

Global Reading Challenge runs from November 1 through the middle of March.  For the first two months, students who apply read at least two of the required books, meet once a week during lunch recess, and will eventually work in teams of up to 7 to answer trivia style questions. Teams will be created by Mrs. Leland and will be a mixture of 4th and 5th grade students.

Our teams will compete at an in-school competition around the end of January to determine which team will move on to represent Olympic View Elementary in the district semi-finals held at the Seattle Public Library downtown branch.

GRC provides many opportunities for our readers to grow.  First, it encourages our students to read a variety of diverse books.  Working as a team allows our students to learn what it means to be a responsible team member, how to show good sportsmanship, and how to respectfully resolve disagreements with teammates.

This program is 100% optional and decisions to participate should be made by our students.

If you have questions about the program, please contact Kristi Leland at klleland@seattleschools.org . Applications are due November 8.

Leaves and Feathers for our Thankful Tree

On November 8, for the next Wonderful Wednesday project our theme will be thankfulness. We will be inspired by the work of Michael Dupille, a Seattle based artist who works with glass and a kiln. Since we can’t work with those things on the playground, we will work with the next best alternatives: sand and glue!

Using wooden leaves and feathers, we will write something on the back that we are thankful for, and then use sand and glue to decorate them. Once they are dry, we will hang them from a Thankful Tree in the hallway at OV!

Last Chance: Calling All Veterans!

silhouette of soldier saluting against an American flag background

As we prepare for our annual Veterans Day Assembly, we would love your contributions! Have you served or do you have a family member who has served our country?

Please submit a photo of your veteran and include the following information:

  • Time of active duty (ex: 1970-2000)
  • Name and Rank of veteran
  • Name of OV student
  • Relationship to student

All submissions can be emailed to Ms. Roosma rmroosma@seattleschools.org. Please have all submissions in to her by end of day, November 6.

The assembly will be on November 9, at 8:15 am.  We invite you to this assembly, but we especially want you to invite the vets of your life to join us as we honor the Veterans of the greater Olympic View community.

Kraken Community Iceplex – Free Skating

In partnership with the Seattle Kraken, the OV PTA is proud to announce a FREE ice skating opportunity at the Kraken Community Iceplex (KCI) in Northgate on Saturday, November 11 from 4 PM to 5:30 PM.  This event is open to the entire OV community – adults & kids!

We’ll have a check-in table setup in the main lobby where parents/guardians can fill out the waiver form to get skating wristbands for their family.  There will be some skate aids available for use and a skate monitor from KCI.  Kids are encouraged to bring helmets/safety gear if they have them (there will also be some helmets available for temporary use at the rink).

Please note: this is not a drop-off event – kids must be accompanied by an adult.

We hope to see you there!

UW Athletic Event Tickets

UW has provided tickets for some additional sporting events. Use the form below to sign up for tickets.

  • Men’s Basketball vs Oregon State Saturday 1/6 at 3pm
  • Women’s Basketball vs Utah Friday 2/2 at 7pm

Movie Night – Save the Date

Join us for our first PTA sponsored Movie Night of the school year at the Olympic View auditorium on Friday, December 1 at 6 PM!!

Kids can bring their blankets and pillows to watch a movie on the big screen. Food and drinks will be available for purchase throughout the evening.

These events are successful with parent volunteers who help set up the gym, work concessions, or help with cleanup. If you’re interested in volunteering sign up. These are also good volunteer opportunities for teens looking to get their hours, so pass along to your OV Alumni.

Please note: this is not a drop-off event – kids must be accompanied by an adult.

Volunteer Opportunities

Library Volunteers Wanted

Calling all volunteers!  We are looking for a few parents who would be willing to volunteer in the library. Volunteers will help pick up books from classrooms, check books in, and return books to their shelves.  Occasional special project may also arise throughout the year and your help would be greatly appreciated.

Volunteers Needed for Skating

Volunteers are needed for grades 1 and 2. Volunteers will help expedite students getting their safety gear on. Students can bring their own helmets and skates for the unit.  Please label all equipment being brought from home. Students will also have time to practice getting safety gear on before the unit starts.

Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)

The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests one. The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week. We need volunteers to help with packing on Friday mornings from about 8:00-9:00 am. If you are able to help during this timeframe, we would be grateful for your help!

We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time. Questions? Contact k.linnes@gmail.com

We also need plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store).  If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.
