The Eagle – Week of October 09

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Indigenous Peoples Day: This Monday, we will be honoring Indigenous People’s Day.  At Olympic View we are continually working on developing our own culturally responsive instruction and community, so that these days are considered one offs. This year we are investing money into our library to expand our collection of books from Indigenous authors. We want to make sure that all students see themselves in our instruction and in our representation at school. For example, we begin each assembly with the following land acknowledgement. “We would like to show our respect and knowledge the Puget Sound Coast Salish peoples, past and present, on whose lands we gather today. The Suquamish Tribe and Muckleshoot Indian Tribe are the federally recognized Indian tribes of greater Seattle, under the treaties of greater Seattle, under the treaties of Point Elliott and Medicine Creek.”

October Virtue Assembly: Each month at Olympic View, we have our Changemaker school virtue. In October we will focus on the idea of “self-control.” This Monday we will have our first virtue assembly.

Spirit Day: This Wednesday is “Stripey” Day.

Picture Day: Individual school picture day will be this Thursday, October 12. Order Pictures from Dorian Studios

New Multi-Age Class: This past week I informed our third and fourth grade families that I was being required to turn one of my fourth-grade classes into a 3rd and 4th grade split in order to be compliant with Washington State Law (RCW 28A.150.260). This change impacted over 40 schools within the district. In the past, SPS used mitigation money to fund the differences, but they do not have that mitigation money this year due to the budget deficit. If the district did not comply with OSPI, it would lose millions of dollars from the grant that funded K-3 class size reduction.

Due to this requirement, I had to move 9 students from 3rd grade into the split. Ms. Mahlik, who was teaching a straight fourth grade, will now be teaching the split, so some of her students had to move to our other two 4th-grade class. I want to give a shout out to my third and fourth grade teams who have handled this change in such a professional manner. This was extremely painful for them since they worked so hard to develop communities and did not want to lose any of their students.

Lunch Schedule Changes: To ensure that the third graders in the 3-4 split had time with their peers, I had to redo our lunch schedule to the following:

  • First Lunch 10:55-11:15 (K/2)
  • Second Lunch 11:20-11:40 (3/4)
  • Third Lunch 11:45-12:05 (1/5)

No School on Friday: This is the yearly teacher in-service day.

COVID/Flu Vaccines: SPS is providing free COVID and/or flu vaccines to kids throughout the district. The clinics are run by the Seattle Visiting Nurse Association at various Seattle Public Schools. Register for Free COVID and/or Flue Vaccines Registration

Volunteering: Volunteers should complete all steps of the SPS Volunteer Application or confirm that they are current with their application. (Note: Please plan on it taking a week to process the information, so if you are planning on volunteering for a field trip, please plan ahead. I am unable to make exceptions.)

 In Partnership!

Monday Morning Messages from Assistant Principal Rachel Roosma

Happy October! With each new month we begin a new attribute of a changemaker. This month we are working on self-control and how we can apply it around our building and in our personal lives. Chat with your kiddo at home about ways they can show self control at home. The reality is, when we practice self control in various areas of our lives we become people who are able to focus in on the things that matter the most. What an awesome thing to practice and grow in!  This Monday, 10/9/23, we will have our first attribute of a changemaker assembly. You are welcome to come and see how we rock and roll in our assemblies.

For a complete collection of Ms. Roosma’s Monday Morning Messages, check out her page on our Olympic View Website: Assistant Principal Rachel Roosma
