The Eagle – Week of October 02

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Back to School Night a Success! It was so great seeing families on Thursday night! It was such an amazing event.

October Virtue: Each month at Olympic View, we have our Changemaker school virtue. In October we will focus on the idea of “self control.”

Covid/Flu Vaccines: SPS  is providing free COVID and/or flu vaccines to kids throughout the district. The clinics are run by Seattle Visiting Nurse Association at various Seattle Public Schools.  Signetic Registration for free COVID and/or flue vaccines for kids

Picture Day: Individual school picture day will be on Thursday, October 12. Pre-Order Photos

Partnership with Operation Warm: OV will be partnering with Operation Warm in early November. Operation Warm is a national nonprofit that manufactures brand-new, high-quality coats and shoes for children in need. This will be an event where every student will receive a brand-new fitted coat and a pair of shoes. Although not all students necessarily need them, our plan is for each child to go through the process and then we would ask families to donate them if they are not needed.  (We do not have to do a coat drive this year!!) In addition, Amazon is now donating hats and gloves and a new book for all the kids!

Partnership with Ballard Office Max. We have partnered with OfficeMax. Customers are asked if they would like to donate to a Title 1 Seattle school. All funds raised from this store go to OV! In August, I purchased over $2500 in school supplies (about 2 carts full). In November, I will receive another opportunity which could be up to $5000. I encourage families to support this business for their office needs!

Volunteering: Volunteers should complete all steps of the Seattle Public Schools Volunteer Application or confirm that they are current with their application. (Note: Please plan on it taking a week to process the information, so if you are planning on volunteering for a field trip, please plan ahead. I am unable to make exceptions.)

Dates to Remember:

  • Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Monday, October 9
  • Picture Day: Thursday, October 12
  • Teacher In-service: (No School) – Friday, October 13
  • Maple Leaf Community Council Meeting: Wednesday, October 18 from 6:00-7:30
  • Fall Festival: Friday, October 20 from 4:00-7:00

In Partnership!

Monday Morning Messages from Assistant Principal Rachel Roosma

This week we take a closer look at the eagle way and the bathrooms. Seems like such a simple idea right? Well you may be surprised to find out that many of our kiddos take their time and find it a place to socialize. Maybe not so much in kindergarten…but definitely more as they get older. This week we dig into the song taught by Ms. Grace “Do your business, mind your business, wash and go, wash and go.” Ask your kiddos to sing this song to you and share with you what it means. In Ms. Grace’s chat with all of the students at OV, she talked about how much soap and how much paper towels to use and how to properly wash your hands. Take a look and a listen to what the expectations are for the eagle way in the bathroom.

This Week’s News

A Note from Nurse Angie

COVID and Flu Vaccines:

Please consider vaccinating against the Flu and COVID.  Getting the vaccine will not guarantee you do not contract these common viruses, but it will help protect you against severe illness.  You can get these vaccines at your doctor’s office, local pharmacy, but also at several SPS vaccine clinics.  These clinics serve all ages and you do not have to be affiliated with SPS to be seen.

Vaccine Clinics Lists

Student-Based Health Centers:

Additionally, all SPS students can be seen for free at any SPS high school or middle school that has a Student-Based Health Center.  These clinics are staffed with a Nurse Practitioner, and they offer all medical services including well-child visits and childhood vaccinations (including COVID and flu!).

List of Student Based Health Centers

You must be a student enrolled at SPS to be seen at a Student-Based Health Center.

Immunizations:

All students must have all their required childhood vaccines to attend school.  Required immunization chart linkIf your child is missing one or more of these vaccines, they are at risk of being excluded from school.  Please be sure your child is up to date on their immunizations.  Reach out if you are unsure what vaccines your child might need.

Viral Season:

We are moving into the season of coughs and sniffles.  It is required that you COVID test your student with all new symptoms and continue testing every other day until they are improving.  If you don’t test OR if your child tests positive, they must stay home for 5 full days from the onset of symptoms or positive test AND wear a mask until Day 11.  Day 0 is the first day of symptoms or positive test.  If you are unsure about how to calculate your isolation, the Department Of Health has provided a helpful decision tree: Department of Health Decision Tree. Please help us keep kids in school by keeping sick kids home, wearing a mask if they have symptoms, and testing frequently.  I can provide COVID tests if needed.
