The Eagle – Week of October 23
Letter from Principal Bean
Dear Families,
Fall Festival: A big shoutout to all the volunteers who made this event possible. I want to give a special shoutout to Robert Wilson and Tom Finelli for spearheading the event.
Cake Contest Winner: As always, the tables were filled with amazing cakes. The competition was tough this year, but congratulations to Harlan Gonzales for the “Best in Show” award!
Art Installation: On Thursday and Friday, during multi-arts class, Ms. Law had students create a temporary art installation using leaves. Kids had a blast! Here is a picture that a group of fifth graders created.
What Is Bullying? October is National Anti-Bullying Prevention Month. In the last couple of weeks our counselor, Joyce Rho, has given lessons in each classroom. Conflict is common (and developmentally appropriate). Bullying, however, is different. We have defined it this way:
- When you target someone on purpose to tease them, to hurt them, and their feelings, to name call, to exclude, etc.
- When the situation happens over and over
- When there is an imbalance of power
During the lessons she also taught students to differentiate “small problems” from “big problems.” The main focus was for students to understand our collective responsibility to fight bullying by understanding the 3 R’s.
- Recognize bullying
- Refuse to be bullied. Stand up for yourself confidently!
- Report it to an adult. Don’t be a bystander. If you see something, say something!
Unity Day on Wednesday: To reinforce this message, we are going to have a “Unity Day” on October 25. This will be a day to collectively come together to celebrate our common desire to be “upstanders.” We are encouraging students to wear bright colors (orange, yellow, red) to demonstrate their solidarity. Video of Unity Day.
Below is a picture of a collage that Ms. Rho created. Each student signed and decorated a heart.
In Partnership!

Ms. Roosma’s Corner
We continue this month talking about self-control, redefining it for those who need that extra layer of support. This week we talked about how sometimes you have a voice on your shoulder that tells you to do the right thing and that other voice that sometimes says to do the wrong thing. When we listen to the voice that is helping us to do the right thing we are practicing self-control. This week we also heard from two teachers who shared with us the strategy they use to practice self-control. Perhaps a way for you and your family to connect to our attribute of a changemaker is to talk about the strategy that you, (yes you!), the adult in their lives use to practice self control. I believe that when we the adults share our own experience/strategies with self-control (or any other element), it helps our kiddos see that we as adults also use strategies to support us in our journey through life. What would be really awesome is for our kiddos to practice strategies alongside their families at home!
