Black Lives Matter in Schools Week: This week all classes are celebrating Black Lives Matter in Schools week. Each day there will be a different theme. Classes will be having age-appropriate conversations around the following topics.
Grades K-3
- Monday: Why do we celebrate BLM at school?
- Tuesday: Celebrating our family and our culture.
- Wednesday: Celebrating Black Joy
- Thursday: Celebrating Black Women
- Friday: Celebrating Activism in our Community
Grades 4-5

Global Reading Challenge: Led by our librarian Kristi Leland, over the past few weeks many of our fourth and fifth graders have spent their free time reading a wide variety of books. They have been grouped into teams. On Tuesday at 9:00 am, all the teams will go to the cafeteria where a City of Seattle librarian will be facilitating a trivia-style game where they will ask questions about the books the kids read. The winning team will move on to compete against winners from other schools in Seattle at the public library downtown!
5th Grade Artist in Residency Experience: Thanks to the generous donations from our families, 5th grade has begun their “Clowning” classes. Over the next few weeks, each student will develop their own clowning persona that culminates in a performance. Each student gets an actual clown nose that they put on when they get into character!

Global Reading Challenge In School Competition
For the past several months, our 4th and 5th graders have been preparing for the Global Reading Challenge. Students have been reading a variety of different books, cooperating with others in teams, and memorizing facts about each book in preparation for our in-school competition. This year our competition will be held on Tuesday, February 6 from 9:00-10:00am, in the OV lunchroom. Parents, we’d love for you to join us on that date.

Dress up like your favorite decade and win our costume contest! Have something to donate? We are looking for services, goods (we have a themed basket for just about anything), tickets to events, or a special big ticket item. Email fundraising@ovpta.org with donations or drop off at the front office.
NEW: Looking for childcare? Email Erin at collaborationstation@aol.com to reserve a spot. The cost is $30 for the first kid, $25 for siblings and includes activities and dinner and care lasts from 5:30 – 9:30 at OV. Your child does not need to be regularly enrolled in Collaboration Station to participate. 10 kids minimum so please reserve your spot ASAP! (Cancellation policy: Any cancellations must be made at least 48 hours in advance or you will be charged for the spot.)
OVPTA Surplus Grants for 2023-2024!
We’ve already received a few mini grant applications! Now, we’re asking for your input! At Surplus Grants Advice Survey, you can read the proposals and let us know what you think. The PTA Board will consider your input and will vote on these proposals at our February 12 Board Meeting. You can continue submitting your own proposals and we’ll look them over every month!

PE Biking Unit Has Begun: Volunteers Welcome!
Below are the classes for 2nd-5th grade:

All students should wear multiple layers. This unit is taught outside, rain or shine. Students who own a helmet should bring it for the unit. Otherwise, bikes and helmets will be provided by Cascade Bicycle Club. Fifth graders are allowed to bring bikes that are well maintained and are the right size. Volunteers will help with getting helmets on, managing skill stations, and helping support the students in the learner area.

The Art Committee wants your feedback!
Have you heard about Olympic View Elementary’s exciting proposal to create land acknowledgment art work in the cafeteria? The proposed artwork will honor the Duwamish People (dxʷdəwʔabš), Muckleshoot Nation (bəqəlšuł) , Snoqualmie Nation (sdukʷalbixʷ), and Suquamish Nation (xʷsəq̓ʷəb) whose ancestral lands our school occupies.

General Information
Late Arrivals to School
If your student is late (the bell rings at 7:55 a.m.), please drop them off at the NE 95th Street entrance near the flagpole or blacktop. We now have a call box at the 95th Street entrance. After the bell rings at 7:55 a.m., all students must be signed in with office staff. The 8th Ave call box entrance will be used for staff only.
Absences
If your student will not be at school, please email the attendance email olympicview.attendance@seattleschools.org or call 202-252-5504 to let office staff know.
Early Pick Up
Parents/Guardians should come to the 95th Street security call box entrance. We are unable to call students down to the office until you arrive for pick up.
Pick Up Changes
If your student will have an alternate plan for pick up, please contact the office via email olympicview@seattleschools.org, phone 206-252-5500, Talking Points message, or a signed note with your student.
Our breakfast and lunch menus are now up on the SPS website!
