Letter from Principal Bean
Dear Families,
Multicultural Night Shout-out: As usual, multicultural night was an amazing success. Having food from around the world is so much fun. I want to give special thanks to Rachel Modi, Rob Wilson and Tom Fanelli for organizing the event. I also want to thank Waylin Wilson’s family for sharing their Native American culture through the cedar activity.
Responding to ICE: I know there is a lot of anxiety around ICE right now. I want to share with everyone that Olympic View (and SPS) remains committed to serving all families. If ICE were ever to appear at Olympic View, I have trained staff to report this immediately to me and to call security, and that we would refuse entry into the school unless there was a warrant. And even if there were a warrant, it would have to be verified by our legal department. If you want to read more, follow this link: Superintendent Procedure 4310SP.B
“Shelter-in-Place” vs “Lockdown”. I wanted to clarify the difference between a lockdown and a shelter in place. A lockdown is the most restrictive response to an emergency and is used when there is an immediate threat to a school. In a lockdown, instruction stops. All exterior locks and classroom doors are locked. Students are quiet and move to the most secure area in the room. A shelter-in-Place is less restrictive. Students continue to learn but movement is restricted based on what the threat might be, such as staying indoors for recess. This is what schools did last week when there were rumors of ICE activity in the area.
Dress for the Weather: Just a reminder to have your students dress for the weather. We go outside for recess, unless it is absolutely pouring.
OV Auction: Please make sure to reserve February 7 for the annual school auction. You can sign up for the event here! Auction Registration
In partnership,
Mr. Bean (he/him)

OV Science Night
Wednesday, March 11
5:00–7:00 p.m.

Get ready for an evening of hands-on discovery and fun for the whole family! OV Science Night will feature interactive science activities, visiting science organizations, and engaging stations for kids of all ages — including special activities from Pacific Science Center.
Volunteers wanted!
We’re looking for science superstars of all kinds — parents, engineers, tinkerers, hobbyists, and curious minds.
Ways to get involved:
- Join the Science Night planning committee! No science background required, just a desire to help make this event a success!
- Share your science expertise! Or connect us with a scientist you know! Want to share the science behind your home worm bin? Do you know a neurosurgeon who would come tell us all about their job? Do you collect rocks and know all about them? Students who meet scientists in their community are more likely to see science as a future for them!
- Help on the night of the event! Watch for an upcoming SignupGenius.
Interested? Please contact Mariia (email: projectdesk.mk@gmail.com).
Girls on the Run is Back! Starting March 24
The Girls on the Run Spring 2026 Season is right around the corner, and we have limited spots available on the Olympic View team! Girls on the Run is so much more than running. Participants from past seasons shared:
“GOTR was the most exciting thing I’ve ever done!”
“GOTR was the only program I’ve done that I actually felt welcomed in.”
“It was a joy to do GOTR and meet everyone on our team.”
Our program is:
- designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological, and physical skills and behaviors with research-based lessons.
- focused on teaching critical life skills like managing emotions, helping others, making intentional decisions, and resolving conflict.
- delivered by volunteer coaches who complete extensive training focused on fostering an inclusive environment, celebrating individual achievements, and creatively integrating movement in a fun and motivating way.
Our 8-week season runs from the week of March 24 through the week of May 19.
Practices will be Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:30-4 p.m. You must have someone available to pick up your student at 4 p.m.
The regional celebratory 5K fun run will take place at On May 18 at Renton Memorial Stadium to cap off the season.
You will be able to complete Winter After School Enrichment. You will not be able to do Spring After School Enrichment.
If your child is in the school musical production, they can miss the 1st week of GOTR for Tech Week.
Connection and teamwork build confidence and resilience in our participants. Girls on the Run provides a safe and inclusive space to thrive and flourish—register your child today!
Partial and full scholarships are available to any family in need. Any reference to “girls” includes gender-expansive and non-binary youth. Visit www.gotrpugetsound.org to learn more and register.

Volunteer Opportunities
Move-A-Thon Volunteer Needed
Are you looking for a fun and meaningful volunteer opportunity at Olympic View? For those who may not be familiar, the Move-a-Thon is a longstanding and beloved fundraiser that takes place in the spring (this year it’s April 10). Students collect pledges from friends and family and walk or run around the OV blacktop. We are hoping to find a parent who is interested in shadowing the current volunteer this year, then take the lead with her support in 2026-2027. This is a great role for someone who is looking for a project that is already well-organized, student-facing and requires attention only during a portion of the year.
Please reach out to president@OVPTA.org and/or fundraising@OVPTA.org if you are interested in learning more!
Wonderful Wednesday Helpers
Once a month the Art Committee hosts a lunch recess art activity that is absolutely beloved by the students. From 11:05am-11:55pm we offer a small project supporting seasonal themes and exploring a variety of materials. Contact Cara Mattera at enrichment@ovpta.org for more Art Committee information.
Library Help
Thank you for considering volunteering in the OV Library. If this is your first time volunteering in the library, please reach out to Ms. Leland klleland@seattleschools.org to receive an SPS Volunteer Invitation. Send any questions my way.
Kristi Leland
Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)
The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests it. The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week. We need volunteers to help with picking up from the Food Bank on Thursday afternoons and packing on Friday mornings from about 8:00-9:00 am. If you are able to help during this timeframe, please sign up.
We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Approved volunteers can feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday, after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time.
We can always use plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store). If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.
