The Eagle – Week of May 11

The Eagle

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families

Thanks for the Staff Appreciation Week! Thank you to all the people who made such delicious food and who helped organize all the delicious meals. This meant so much to our staff who needed that extra bump to finish the year strong!

Hootenanny on Friday: Our annual talent show is coming this Friday from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria!

May Attribute of a Changemaker: This month we are focusing on the idea of community.  Kindergarten will be leading our assembly on Monday.

Spirit Day: As a way to celebrate community, this Wednesday will be “OV Spirit Day”. It would be great if every student wore their shirt from the Move-a-thon (or some other OV gear).

SBA Testing Begins This Week: 3rd-5th grade students begin state testing this week. Please make sure your kids get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive on time, as testing begins first thing in the morning.

Signing in at the Office: Just a reminder that all visitors must sign into the office after entering the building.

New Cell Phone Policy: SPS is implementing a new cell phone policy. For grades K-8, the expectations are that cell phones are “away for the day.” This means that they need to be turned off and safely secured. If a staff member sees a phone, the staff member will take the phone, and the phone will be returned to the student at the end of the day. If it continues to happen, then families will be contacted, and a more restrictive plan will be implemented.

In partnership,

Mr. Bean (he/him)
Principal, Olympic View

Plastic Bottles Needed!

Mx. Maiani’s class needs your help! We’ve decided to use our class points to make bottle rockets! So fun 😊. Do you have plastic soda bottles that you could rinse and donate for this project? 20 oz, 1L or 2L size plastic bottles would be great. Please drop off clean plastic bottles to room 203 or leave them with the main office.

Thanks for your help! -Mx. Maiani’s 4th grade class

Mx. Maiani’s 4th grade class is collecting food donations to take to the University District Food Bank. If you can donate, please drop off non-perishable food items outside the main office, or inside room 203. Field Day is FRIDAY, JUNE 5th

Field Day is almost here, and we couldn’t be more excited! This year’s event will take place on Friday, June 5th, beginning with lunch and continuing into an afternoon of activities featuring 14 stations. All students will get a free lunch if they choose to have the lunch offered.

Field Day is a wonderful opportunity for our Olympic View community to come together and celebrate. To make this a day to remember for all our students, we’d love your help! We need donations of sidewalk chalk, volunteers to assist with lunch prep, service, and cleanup, and 30–40 helpers to run the Field Day stations. Field Day Volunteer Sign-Up

All volunteers must be registered with Seattle Public Schools. Please visit the SPS Volunteer Portal Guide to update your volunteer status for this year or to complete your volunteer application.

Please contact Kristel Gonzales (k.linnes@gmail.com) or Mrs. Bruecher (bhbruecher@seattleschools.org) with any questions.

Thank you—and get ready for a super fun time!

Volunteer Opportunities

Wonderful Wednesday Helpers

Once a month the Art Committee hosts a lunch recess art activity that is absolutely beloved by the students. From 11:05 a.m.-11:55 p.m. we offer a small project supporting seasonal themes and exploring a variety of materials. Contact Cara Mattera at enrichment@ovpta.org for more Art Committee information.

Library Help

Thank you for considering volunteering in the OV Library. If this is your first time volunteering in the library, please reach out to Ms. Leland klleland@seattleschools.org to receive an SPS Volunteer Invitation.  Send any questions my way.

Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)

The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests it.  The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week.  We need volunteers to help with picking up from the Food Bank on Thursday afternoons and packing on Friday mornings from about 8-9 a.m. If you are able to help Eagle Pack during this timeframe, please sign up

We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Approved volunteers can feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday, after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time.

We can always use plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store).  If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.
