The Eagle – Week of June 10
The Eagle – Week of June 10
Letter from Principal Bean
Dear Families,
Volunteer Appreciation: We had our annual Volunteer Assembly last Thursday and had a great turnout! Thank you to all the volunteers who have contributed so much. Without you, we don’t have “OV”!
Golden Acorn Award Winners: At the volunteer assembly, three volunteers were awarded the Golden Acorn Award recognizing all their amazing contributions and will have their names engraved on a plaque in our trophy case. (The following excerpts were taken from Sabrina’s speech at the assembly!)
- Melissa Scott – She has helped on field trips, taught many of you art lessons as an Art Docent and is always willing to step in when she sees help is needed. A few years ago when we were slowly bringing things back after covid, we realized a large shift in volunteers had happened. The first event that was at risk for losing some of the traditions that we all love was the Fall Festival. When people were hesitant about bringing this tradition back, one parent stepped up and said she would handle the whole thing. And she kept her word, keeping the Cake Contest and Cake Walk alive.
- Jenn Wroblewski – She is one of the most selfless people I have ever met. On top of all the things she has volunteered for, all of the items she has baked for nearly every single event, all the money she has raised by leading one successful plant sale after another, she also advocated for our school in a huge way by speaking up and sharing the importance of having Ms. Roosma stay at OV.
- Sarah Wichlacz – Everything she does is to bring a positive change to Olympic View, and we see it mostly through our Arts Program. Students enjoy Wonderful Wednesdays, Art Docent, Multicultural Nights, Arts Night, and Science Night because of her time and dedication. And soon we’ll all enjoy a new Native American collaborative piece of artwork at Olympic View because of the vision she had.
LOVE Award: Each year the PTA nominates someone from the community, including staff, for the “Lifetime Olympic View Elementary” award. This year’s winner is Carol Maurer!
- Carol Maurer– She started here as a parent and became a committed volunteer then eventually was hired at Olympic View. She is someone that quietly works in the background, yet her incredible work is never overlooked. She is humble and loyal and brings joy to our students and staff. Almost always she will step in to make sure something gets done, often not taking any credit or praise for jobs completed. But the biggest thing she has brought to Olympic View is just outside these doors. On the first of each month, we walk into the school and find a fabulous new birthday board. The reactions are priceless.
June Changemaker Virtue Assembly: In June, we will be focusing on the theme of cooperation/teamwork. This Monday (June 10) we will have our virtue assembly that will feature our 5th grade instrumental musicians and the choir.
Spirit Day: This Wednesday is “Monochrome Day.” Kids are encouraged to wear just one color!
Spirit Week: The last week of school will be “Spirit Week”. Each day we will have a different theme.
- Monday, June 17 – Glitter, Sparkle, Shimmer, Shiny, Light-up Day
- Tuesday, June 18 – Animal Day
- Thursday, June 20 – Rainbow Day
- Friday, June 21 – Dress like its summer vacation
Lost and Found: When the year ends, we will be donating all unclaimed clothes/lunch boxes/water bottles/etc., so please come check out the lost and found.
Device Return: Computer devices will be collected on June 17th and June 18th. Please make sure to find all the chargers and cases, as well.
In Partnership!

This Week’s News
Instrumental Music Families
Wow! What a year it has been! We have all learned how to play music with each other online, how to make a recording on the computer, how to share and ask questions in new ways, and even take quizzes!
After students are finished, we ask that if you have borrowed a school instrument, please return it to the school’s main office, labeled with your child’s name. Please do this no later than June 10. This will help us do the inventory and get all the instruments to the shop for sanitizing and maintenance by the end of the school year.
During their last class students will share the video projects they have been compiling. I encourage you to have a family “concert night,” and to celebrate your child’s accomplishments, as we have not been able to do this as a school community this year. Thank you so very much for your incredible support of your child’s musical explorations at home!
For all students moving on to middle school, I wish you the best as you go on to your next adventure. And, for all returning students, I look forward to creating music with you next year! As always, it has been a privilege to teach your children.
Sincerely,
Julie Gendrich, instrumental music

Summer Reading Recommendations from the Library
Summer is a perfect time for reading! This week your child should have brought home a list of reading recommendations put together by Mrs. Leland and a team of NE school librarians. Book titles are grouped by grade levels, but please encourage your child to read what they want! Better yet, find a book that sounds good and read it together. This list of books can also be found online.
If you have a 5th grader about to head off to middle school, your readers also brought home two sheets with reading recommendations. One has a comprehensive list of titles created by Ms. Christiansen and Ms. Sterling at JAMS and Eckstein Middle Schools.
Wishing you a summer full of reading!
Medication Authorizations for the 2024/25 School Year
This information is for parents of students who require medication at school.
Students with severe or life threatening conditions MUST have medication at school. If your child has asthma or serious allergies, it is a legal requirement the school be notified and have the appropriate emergency medications in the building. Students cannot self-carry their medications in elementary school. Medications must be kept in the office.
Please compete the following steps before the beginning of the next school year:
- Complete and sign the attached Medication Authorization form. Note there is one specifically for Asthma, one for Life Threatening Allergies/Anaphylaxis, and a general form for all other medications. Please note each medication requires it’s own form. AsthmaLife Threatening AllergiesGeneral Medication Authorization
- Your doctor must fill out and sign the form. Until I receive the complete form (signed and filled out by you and your doctor) the authorization is not complete. I can help by faxing this form to your doctor.
- Before the first day of school 2024-25, please bring the appropriate medication to the nurse’s office.
- If your student will be attending a different school, please call the school office to make sure the nurse has received all the appropriate information for your student.
Please reach out to Nurse Angie if you have questions. amsterwald@seattleschools.org
First Day of School Supplies will be handled by the OV PTA again this year!
Thanks for all your constructive feedback on our survey – this is a REALLY big job for us – so we’re happy to hear how important it is to OV. We’re still hoping to find some more help this summer. Can you help shop for items, store supplies over the summer, or help with inventory and distribution? Let us know at president@ovpta.org. Please also be on the lookout at the end of summer for a link to donate to help the PTA offset the cost of buying the supplies. Enjoy your summer – and don’t worry about school supply shopping!!!
Which activities should the PTA continue next year?
We know that everyone is giving as much volunteer time as they can and we appreciate all you do for the PTA, but we also know that we’ve struggled to find volunteers for many activities this year. Can you help us decide if the PTA is doing too much? Let us know what activities and programs are most important to you. Let us know what activities you think the PTA should continue.
OVPTA Board still has openings – want to join the fun?
Next year’s PTA Board is a friendly and supportive group! We’ve got oldies and newbies and we’re going to have a great time this year! Volunteering on the PTA Board is a great way to be in the know about what’s happening at OV! Our Board meets monthly, we can usually arrange childcare so you can attend a meeting, and we offer a virtual meeting option. We’re looking to find one more Co-Fundraising Director and one more Co-Activities Director. See descriptions and our current help wanted info! If you have any questions, please reach out to Andrea and Chad at president@ovpta.org and we’re happy to chat!
