The Eagle – Week of March 11

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Attributes of a Changemaker Assembly: This month we are focusing on the changemaker attribute of courage. Fifth grade will be featured in this assembly.

Honoring Billy Frank Jr.: On Friday, all classes learned about the late Billy Frank Jr., a Nisqually tribe member changemaker. His courageous activism led to what was known as the Fish Wars. This ultimately culminated in the Boldt Decision in 1974. Here is a really cool video we showed the kids. The narrator is actually the voice of Billy Frank Jr.  Billy Frank Jr. Video

Science Night on Thursday: Science Night is this Thursday from 5:30-7:30 in the cafeteria. It should be so much fun!

School Budget Update: On Wednesday, I presented our budget update for next year. Similar to other schools throughout the district, Olympic View is facing budget cuts for next year. The biggest impact is that we are not funded any assistant principal position. The staff is weighing scenarios of how to best leverage our limited resources to have a high-functioning school by creating safe and welcoming environments and culturally responsive and rigorous instruction where all students have the supports that they need. Attached is a short survey if you would like to give input: Family Budget Input Survey

Movie Night: I wanted to give a shout out to Billy Thompson for all the work he did in making the PTA movie night a success.

OV Musical: Don’t forget to get tickets for the OV musical. Our talented thespians will be performing “Imagine a Dragon”. Performances will be March 22-24. For more information, see the blurb further on down the Eagle!

In Partnership!

Imagine a Dragon a new musical flyer

Imagine a Dragon – The dragon is back in town! Well… not really. That’s the story a ragtag band of innkeepers makes up, desperate to draw questing heroes to the struggling Dancing Dragon Inn. Soon the inn is full of unexpected guests, from an army of princesses out to prove their bravery, to a group of overwhelmed heroes trying to hold onto their fame. But what happens if they all discover the innkeepers’ dragon story is made up? Could there be more than one way to save the day? An epic folk-rock score brings magic to this funny, heartfelt fantasy musical.

OVPTA Surplus Grants for 2023-2024!

The PTA Board decided that we can fund some surplus grants this year!
Do you have an idea that supports the OVPTA mission and goals, but you need funds to make it happen? The PTA has designated up to $20,000 to be spent on projects executed by our OV community members. That means YOU, our OV staff and our OV families, can submit a proposal for a project you’ll spearhead! In past years, these mini-grants have funded classroom books, equipment upgrades, outdoor projects, and end of year activities. We’ll be trying to prioritize projects that benefit the most OV students and have longevity, but don’t be afraid to submit a proposal for something outside-the-box! Does it make OV even more amazing than it already is? Let’s hear it! We’ll collect proposals, ask for PTA membership input, and the PTA Board will approve some (but not all) proposals each month until the end of the year, or we reach our spending limit. Find more details and fill out your proposal.

Don’t be intimidated by the proposal, it is just our process to get the information, it does not have to be a professional-looking grant! The PTA Board approved 2 surplus grants at our February Board Meeting.

Please email president@ovpta.org with questions or if you’d like to submit your proposal via paper form.

Volunteer Opportunities

Library Volunteers Wanted

Calling all volunteers!  We are looking for a few parents who would be willing to volunteer in the library. Volunteers will help pick up books from classrooms, check books in, and return books to their shelves.  Occasional special project may also arise throughout the year and your help would be greatly appreciated.

Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)

The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests one. The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week. We need volunteers to help with packing on Friday mornings from about 8:00-9:00 am. If you are able to help during this timeframe, we would be grateful for your help!

We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time. Questions? Contact k.linnes@gmail.com

We also need plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store).  If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.
