The Eagle – Week of May 20

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Girls on the Run: This morning the Girls on the Run team is running their 5K race down at Renton Memorial Stadium. Good luck to the girls. You have worked so hard. I want to give a huge shoutout to Lucy Cooley for leading the team and coaches Jenn Dunne, Shukri Wehelie, Nurse Angie and Superstar supporters Jayde Bryant, Caroline Phillips, and Heather Pierce-Maiani. Below is a picture of all the girls, the coaches, and family members who are running with the girls.

School Closures: As you might have heard, the school board gave permission for the the district to close up to 20 schools. This would save the district a significant amount of money and all schools to be “well resourced”. I do not have any insight onto what schools will be closed, but I have heard nothing about Olympic View. If you would like to participate in a community meeting, you can attend any of the following:

  • Saturday, May 25, 10:30 a.m. – noon, Garfield High School, 400 23rd Ave.
  • Tuesday, May 28, 6 – 7:30 p.m., Roosevelt High School, 1410 NE 66th St.
  • Saturday, June 1, 10:30 a.m. – noon, Chief Sealth International High School, 2600 SW Thistle St.
  • Tuesday, June 4, 6 – 7:30 p.m., Zoom meeting

Translation and interpretation services will be provided!

Field Day is Right Around the Corner: Volunteers needed. Please sign up in the link below. It will be on Friday, May 31.

5th Grade SBA Testing: SBA Testing continues for fifth grade this week. If you are planning any appointments, please check in with your child’s teacher to make sure it is not during a testing session. In addition, please make sure your student gets to bed on time and has a good breakfast.

PTA General Meeting: The PTA is hosting their final general meeting next Thursday, May 30 at 6:30 in the cafeteria. Food will be served!

In Partnership!

Kraken Community Iceplex – Free Skating – Saturday, May 25

In partnership with the Seattle Kraken, the OV PTA is proud to announce a FREE ice skating opportunity at the Kraken Community Iceplex (KCI) in Northgate on Saturday, May 25 from 2 PM to 3 PM.  This event is open to the entire OV community – adults & kids!

We’ll have a check-in table setup in the main lobby where parents/guardians can fill out the waiver form to get skating wristbands for their family.  There will be some skate aids available for use and a skate monitor from KCI.  Kids are encouraged to bring helmets/safety gear if they have them (there will also be some helmets available for temporary use at the rink).

Please note: this is not a drop-off event – kids must be accompanied by an adult.

We hope to see you there!

SUN Bucks program

Please check out the link below to see if you can qualify for SUN Bucks program which supports families who might need food during the summer time. This is a program which allows Washington Children to be provided with access to food during the summer months. “The SUN Bucks benefits, a one-time payoff of $120 per eligible child in each household, will be deposited onto new SUN Bucks cards and mailed beginning in early June.” Applications will be accepted through August 31.

Field Day is almost here! Friday, May 31

Field Day is coming up, and we are so excited! Field Day will be held on Friday, May 31st, starting with lunch and moving into the afternoon outdoor activities with 15 stations. To make this day successful, we need volunteers who can help make this a day to remember for all our students. We need lots of sidewalk chalk, 10 lunch helpers, and 40 volunteers to help run the Field Day stations. All students will get a free lunch if they choose to have the lunch offered.

Please make sure you are approved to volunteer. Apply or Renew Volunteer Application

This is such a great time for our Olympic View Community to join in on the fun! Please volunteer and help make one of our favorite days a success. See you there!

Please contact Kristel Gonzales at k.linnes@gmail.com, Chad Cabigting at chad.cabigting@gmail.com or Mrs. Bruecher at bhbruecher@seattleschools.org with any questions.

Thank you, and prepare yourself for a wonderful, fun-filled time!

The OVPTA has questions! And YOU have the answers!!

Here are a few quick (we promise) surveys to let us know what you think. You’re always welcome to email president@ovpta.org, if you’ve got more to say.

  1. Do you want the PTA to purchase First Day of School Supplies again this Fall? Or would you rather do your own shopping? Please respond to this short survey to let us know what you think.
  2. Which activities should the PTA continue next year? Let us know what can go and what should stay! Let us know which activities the PTA should continue.
  3. Who deserves an award for outstanding volunteer this year? Submit your volunteer nomination. The awards will be presented at the Volunteer Recognition Assembly on June 6 at 8:10 a.m.

Thank you all for your generous clothing donations

The only remaining need is for size 6-8 stretchy pants/sweat pants.  Shorts are also ok.

We appreciate you stocking the clothing cabinet for our students.

Volunteer Opportunities

Library Volunteers Wanted

Calling all volunteers!  We are looking for a few parents who would be willing to volunteer in the library. Volunteers will help pick up books from classrooms, check books in, and return books to their shelves.  Occasional special project may also arise throughout the year and your help would be greatly appreciated.

Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)

The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests one. The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week. We need volunteers to help with packing on Friday mornings from about 8:00-9:00 am. If you are able to help during this timeframe, we would be grateful for your help!

We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time. Questions? Contact k.linnes@gmail.com

We also need plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store).  If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.
