The Eagle – Week of October 16

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

October is National Anti-Bullying Prevention Month (Message from counselor Joyce Rho): Hello everyone! My name is Joyce, and I am the school counselor at Olympic View. I wanted to introduce myself once again and share what I am currently implementing school wide.

October is National Anti-Bullying Prevention Month and in honor of that, I am going into all classrooms and providing an anti-bully lesson to all students. We dive into depth into what bullying truly is, how to recognize it, and how to respond to it when or if we see it happen. After the lesson, each student will sign a heart to pledge that they will “think before they speak, because it is hard to fix a broken heart.”

Wrinkled Heart Activity

This bulletin board will be posted in the hallway next to the first-grade classes which will remind students daily of what they have promised. Please ask your child what the 3 Rs are in bullying and what they have learned about bullying prevention!

Unity Day: To reinforce this message, we are going to have a “Unity Day” on October 25. This will be a day to collectively come together to celebrate our common desire to be “upstanders.” We are encouraging students to wear bright colors (orange, yellow, red) to demonstrate their solidarity. The Great Shakeout: This Thursday we will be participating in the Great Shakeout earthquake drill. It would be great if you had a conversation with your child about what your earthquake response would be like at home (or other places). This way kids will not generalize earthquake responses as just getting underneath a desk but understanding potential dangers and knowing how to protect themselves in various contexts. Learn more about the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill

Fall Festival: This Friday is our annual Fall Festival, from 4:30-7:00 p.m. There are still quite a few volunteer opportunities. Fall Festival Volunteer & Chili Cook Off Sign Up

Volunteering: Volunteers should complete all steps of the Volunteer Application or confirm that they are current with their application. (Note: Please plan on it taking a week to process the information, so if you are planning on volunteering for a field trip, please plan ahead. I am unable to make exceptions.)

In Partnership!

Mr. Bean (He/him)

Ms. Roosma’s Corner

This past Monday we got to experience our very first assembly for the year! Did you know we have a school song? If you ever want to hear it, come on over to an assembly of ours. I will tell you, it will never get old…hearing our entire school community sing and do the hand motions is a gift each and every month. We will have an all school assembly every month, we would love to see you there!  In this weeks video, Mr. Bean shows up and demonstrates how NOT to show self-control in the hallways of the school. We also get a glimpse into self control from various aspects of our school community. We learned in our assembly, that when you show self control, it allows you to begin focusing on things outside of yourself. We will get into more as the month goes on.

A word on Event Cleanup: last year we had some challenges getting the school back in order after a great Fall Festival event.  This year we’d like to propose dusting off an old OV Eagle Way tradition and ask/encourage each family that stays to the end of the festival to help pitch in with 5-10 mins of clean-up help (trash pickup, sweeping, putting away games, breaking down a tent, etc).  If we all work together, we can ensure the school is quickly cleaned, organized, and ready for students.

We are looking for Garden Docents!

Are you interested or willing to help with one or two garden projects a month? We would love to have your help teaching our kids about the garden, planting bulbs with students, learning about worm bins and composting, and generally helping create garden science opportunities for our students.

Interested? Email generousgardening@gmail.com to learn more or RSVP for our meeting at Cloud City on Saturday October 21st at 9:00am.
