The Eagle – Week of October 30

Letter from Principal Bean

Dear Families,

Halloween reminder: Just a reminder that students are not to wear costumes to school on Halloween. Also please only allow your child to bring one piece of candy to school for lunch and that they are not to share/trade.

Fall Conferences: Fall conferences are November 20-22. Sign Up for Fall Conferences

Unity Day a Huge Success: As I have written in recent weeks, Olympic View focused on an anti-bullying campaign all through October. Last Wednesday, it was great seeing all the students wearing bright colors in a show of unity. Here is a summary of what students have been learning:

What Is Bullying?

  • When you target someone on purpose to tease them, to hurt them, and their feelings, to name call, to exclude, etc.
  • When the situation happens over and over
  • When there is an imbalance of power

During the lessons she also taught students to differentiate “small problems” from “big problems.” The main focus was for students to understand our collective responsibility to fight bullying by understanding the 3 R’s.

  • Recognize bullying
  • Refuse to be bullied. Stand up for yourself confidently!
  • Report it to an adult. Don’t be a bystander. If you see something, say something!
Before you speak think and be smart it's hard to fix a broken heart.

Operation Warm in Two Weeks: As I have announced in previous Eagle Newsletters, OV will be participating in Operation Warm on November 8. All students will be receiving a new jacket, hat, gloves and a book. K-3 students will also get a new pair of shoes.

Veterans Day: We are having our annual Veterans Day Assembly on Thursday, November 9 at 8:15 AM. On Friday November 10, there will be no school.

In Partnership!

Mr. Bean (He/him)

Ms. Roosma’s Corner

In this week’s episode of self-control, I talk a bit about setting personal goals for self-control: Speaking up for myself and asking for help with self-control.

Oftentimes our kiddos do not have the language to ask for help; can you imagine how awesome it would be to have conversation with your family and set some personal goals for self control?  Talking with each other about what we are working on and asking for support helps us to attain our goals for self-control. This week we hear from a couple of students who share with us about what they are working on with self-control.

For a complete collection of Ms. Roosma’s Monday Morning Messages, check out her page on our Olympic View Website: Assistant Principal Rachel Roosma

Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)

The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests one. The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week. We need volunteers to help with packing on Friday mornings from about 8:00-9:00 am. If you are able to help during this timeframe, we would be grateful for your help!

We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time. Questions? Contact k.linnes@gmail.com

We also need plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store).  If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.

Fall Festival Survey

Thank you for joining us for the OV Fall Festival! This event is not possible without the help of students, staff, volunteers, and the whole rest of the community. We’d love to gather your feedback on the event and how we can improve for future years. You’ll also have the opportunity to enter a drawing to win an OV Prize for filling in the survey!

Please share your feedback in this survey, go ahead and fill in multiple times to capture ideas from your whole family.

Volunteers Needed for Skating

Skating starts Monday, October 30. Volunteers are needed for grades 1 and 2. Volunteers will help expedite students getting their safety gear on. Students can bring their own helmets and skates for the unit.  Please label all equipment being brought from home. Students will also have time to practice getting safety gear on before the unit starts.

If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Bruecher at bhbruecher@seattleschools.org or call at 206-252-5514
