The Eagle – Week of September 18
Message from Principal Bean
Dear Families,
Attributes of a Changemaker: This month we are focused on The Eagle Way.
The students are spending time focusing on what it looks like to take care of self, others, and our school in the main areas of our school building. The first week we focused on walking in the hallways. Some of your kiddos have made it into the video. It has been posted on Ms. Roosma’s YouTube channel. Come back to this spot next month to see the next video.
Repainted Playground: I want to thank some amazing parent volunteers who began to restripe our badly faded playground on Wednesday afternoon. A huge shout out goes to Andrea Chaddock, Tiffany McNees, Laura and Sonja Rogneby, Benasha Popalzai, Chelsea Shipp, Robert Trowbridge, and Chelsea Whittle. There will be another work party in a couple of weeks so be on the lookout for another sign-up link on the OVPTA Facebook page.
Eagle Way Parade: We had beautiful weather and an amazing turnout on Friday. Thank you to all the families who cheered on the students. It is such a great OV tradition at the start of the year.
Family Conferences: The following two Wednesdays, teachers will continue to have 15-minute welcoming conferences with families. Our staff wants to learn about every student’s “strengths, story, and need.” If you have not scheduled a conference, please reach out to your child’s teacher or book your family conference. Please ask your student if you are unsure of their teacher’s name as you must choose their teacher from the drop down menu when booking an appointment.
Back to School Night: Thursday, September 28 will be our annual “Back to School Night”. Last year we replaced our more formal curriculum nights for a more relational experience. This allows families to see all their kids’ teachers more easily as well as for students to share what they are learning in school! (Teachers will still provide packets that will explain the curriculum).
Visitors/volunteers: Please ring the bell at the south entrance (95th Street) near the flagpole. After being let in to the building, sign in at the office, and collect a visitor’s badge.
Late arriving students: Students who arrive to school late should also use the flagpole entrance (95th Street).
Change of Pickup Plan Expectation: If there is a change in the end of the day pickup plan, please communicate with the office well before pickup times either through an email or phone call.
COVID Guidelines: While COVID testing is not required and will not be done at school, frequent COVID testing is recommended. SPS (Seattle Public Schools) released their Respiratory Illness Response.
A quick COVID reminder: students who test positive for COVID will remain home for 5 full days (Day ZERO is day of positive or day of first symptom). They return on Day 6. They must wear a mask from Day 6 THROUGH Day 10. They do not have to test to return but must have no fever for >24 hours and have improved symptoms.
Bus Transportation: For any questions about bus transportation services (late buses, stop changes, student bus issues), please call transportation directly at 206-252-0900.
Student Data Verification: Complete the Student Data Verification form Sept. 6-30, 2023: The student data verification form enables parents and guardians to update their household and student information online. This form includes the important student health information, emergency and family contact information, and much more.
To access, log in to your Source account and select Student Data Verification form from the navigation menu.
The Source: Sign up for your parent/guardian Source account: The Source displays student attendance, assessment sources, and progress reports. It is also how families can access School Pay to pay for student fees (ex. field trips, library fines).
Learn how to create a parent or guardian Source account.
Volunteering: Volunteers should complete every step or confirm that they are current with their application. (Note: Please plan on it taking a week to process the information, so if you are planning on volunteering for a field trip, please plan ahead. I am unable to make exceptions.)
Dates to Remember:
- Back to School Night: Thursday, September 28th from 6:00-7:00
- Teacher In-Service Day (No school): Friday, October 13.

2023-24 School Supplies
Did you notice that you didn’t have to shop for or bring to school any basic school supplies? The OVPTA spent the summer purchasing items from the teachers’ lists in bulk, ensuring that all students start the year off with the same quality supplies. The estimated cost of the purchased supplies averages out to about $35 per student. Please donate what you can at this time to support the PTA with this venture. Pay for school supplies
Show your Eagle Spirit!!
We believe that OV gear builds community pride and every student should be able to show their spirit, so we have priced these shirts as low as possible. This is not intended to be a PTA fundraiser, but if we receive any money from these campaigns, we will purchase shirts to distribute to students who may not be able to afford them. Buy Spirit Wear
The After School Enrichment Program is back!
We have a great variety of classes this fall including chess, drama, basketball, parkour, coding, art, music, and more! Registration will begin at the end of September, with classes beginning mid October. Classes run after school on Thursdays for 8 weeks. More information will be going home in Kidmail soon.
For more information or to get involved with the program, email Sarah Hartley at asp@ovpta.org
Join the PTA! Be a Voice in Your Child’s School!
Join the PTA because increasing our membership, even by one, makes it easier to provide important educational resources, speak up on important issues and create a stronger school community.
The only thing required of you to be a member of the PTA is to pay the annual membership dues of $15 (scholarships always available). Beyond that, however you choose to PTA is up to you. Opportunities include attending quarterly PTA meetings, providing input and voting on PTA initiatives, volunteering at PTA events and fundraisers, participating in advocacy efforts, and holding PTA leadership roles.
Join or renew PTA membership for this year. For questions or scholarship requests, please email membership@ovpta.org.
Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed
The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests it. The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week. We need volunteers to help with packing and occasionally picking up food from the food bank. If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact Kristel Gonzales k.linnes@gmail.com. Last year we packed Thursday afternoons, but can adjust the day/time depending on volunteer availability.
