The Eagle – Week of December 15
Letter from Principal Bean
Dear Families,
One Hour Early Release on Friday: Just a reminder that Friday is a one-hour early release. Students are released at 1:25.
Winter Assembly: We will have our annual winter assembly on Friday afternoon at 12:45!
Winter Break: Students will return from winter break on Monday, January 5.
Holiday Baskets! A big thank you to all that volunteered or donated to our Holiday Baskets! I want to give a huge shout out to Ms. Sabrina and Ms. Joyce for all the work they did behind the scenes to make this happen! And finally, we are so thankful to the Ballard Elks for their amazing generosity each year!
Dress for the Weather: Just a reminder to have your child dress for the weather. Kids need to run, so we always go out when there is light rain. In addition, we don’t have extra clothes if they get wet. It isn’t a bad idea to keep an extra pair of dry clothes (especially socks) in your child’s backpack.
Read-a-thon: This week our amazing librarian, Ms. Leland, is starting our read-a-thon. All students who participate get a free ice cream cone from Ben and Jerry’s! Proceeds from this fundraiser will be split between 5th grade camp and the library. Please scroll down to see more details.
Open Enrollment for School Choice Window: The window for school choice is much earlier this year. The window will go from January 5-31. Families will find out the school on February 24.
School Tours: Because of the earlier enrollment window, we are moving up our school tours this year. They are as following:
- Thursday, January 8 at 8:00 AM
- Wednesday, January 14 at 8:00 AM
In partnership,
Mr. Bean (he/him)
Principal, Olympic View

This Week’s News
After-School Enrichment – Register Now for Winter Session
Registration closes on Friday, December 19th at 11:59PM and schedule adjustments cannot be made after that time.
More information is also available on the Hall of Fame Website.
Winter Quarter classes will run on Thursdays (1/15-3/12). After-school camp is only offered on days when SPS is in session, so there will be no HOFTC Thursday 2/19.
Returning families can send enrollment requests through the Parent Dashboard by clicking Enrollment, and then Enroll for 2025-2026. New families should complete the New Family Enrollment Form prior to registration opening, to get through the process faster. Please note that class information will not be available in the Parent Dashboard until registration goes live.
First Annual Olympic View Read-a-Thon
We are kicking off our first OV Read-a-Thon this Friday with an all school reading session!
OV Librarian Mrs. Leland will be passing out our special flyer and calendar tracker next week along with extra books from the OV library before Winter Break. Kids can keep track on paper or through our fundraising website. Family, friends and neighbors can motivate students by pledging donations for reading. These donations to the PTA will then help fund our library and 5th Grade Campers!
All participants get a coupon for a free ice cream from Ben & Jerry’s. Bonus prizes from Third Place Books and extra library time for the top readers and top classes in each grade.
Drop-In: Family Skate Night
OV Families what a great way to continue the skating momentum from P.E. Bring your own skates, roller blades or borrow a pair. Helmets are required.

A note from Nurse Angie
- Starting on January 6, SPS will not be allowing students to come to school if they are not up to date with their childhood vaccines. If you have received notices from me or the district, please make your child an appointment to receive any required immunizations. Notify me as soon as you make your appointment so we can ensure your child is able to remain in school.
- If you need any help accessing healthcare, SPS offers free healthcare to all enrolled students. Contact Robert Eagle Staff Middle School’s Health Center to make an appointment: 206-548-5770, press option 1 to make an appointment. Their website is here with more information.
- We are seeing an uptick in viral illness at school. Please keep your child home if they are feeling unwell. This allows them to heal faster and helps stop the spread of germs in our community. Discuss at home, the importance of handwashing and covering coughs and sneezes.
- Winter brings an increase in cases of lice! Please check your child weekly for lice and nits. Here is a visual tool from the CDC to help with this.
As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns. Enjoy your break from the school schedule next week.

Volunteer Opportunities
Wonderful Wednesday Helpers
Once a month the Art Committee hosts a lunch recess art activity that is absolutely beloved by the students. From 11:05am-11:55pm we offer a small project supporting seasonal themes and exploring a variety of materials. December 17 will be our next Wonderful Wednesday, please sign-up below. Contact Cara Mattera at enrichment@ovpta.org for more Art Committee information.
Library Help
Thank you for considering volunteering in the OV Library. If this is your first time volunteering in the library, please reach out to Ms. Leland klleland@seattleschools.org to receive an SPS Volunteer Invitation. Send any questions my way.

Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)
The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests it. The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week. We need volunteers to help with picking up from the Food Bank on Thursday afternoons and packing on Friday mornings from about 8:00-9:00 am. If you are able to help during this timeframe, please sign up.
We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Approved volunteers can feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday, after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time.
We can always use plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store). If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.
