Dear Families

Attribute of a Changemaker Assembly: Our school-wide focus for December will be “self-control”. 5th grade will lead the assembly on Monday morning!

Pajama Day on Wednesday: We have our monthly spirit day on Wednesday. Students are encouraged to wear their pajamas!!

Holiday Basket Deadline: Just a reminder that the deadline for donating holiday basket items is this Wednesday. Please scroll down the Eagle to get to the link.

School Musical: I am excited to announce that our school play is back. This year, kids will perform the musical, “New Sheriff in Town”.

Lego Robotics Shoutout: I wanted to celebrate our school’s Lego robotics team. Mx. Maiani is taking the team to the city competition today at Robert Eagle Staff Middle School!

Open Enrollment for School Choice Window: The window for school choice is much earlier this year. The window will go from January 5-31. Families will find out the school on February 24.

Cathy Villanueva

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Cathy “Ms. V” Villanueva on November 23, 2025, at the age of 70.

For more than 25 years, Cathy was a devoted educator—first at Lowell Elementary, and later at Thurgood Marshall and Olympic View. She was beloved by her students and respected by her colleagues. In her early years, Cathy taught in the APP program at Lowell and Thurgood Marshall, and later transitioned to serving as an ELL teacher, dedicating herself to supporting students who faced challenges with English literacy.

Cathy’s students, friends, and colleagues knew that when you spoke with her, she had a remarkable way of making you feel truly seen and heard. In that moment, you were the most important person in her life.

Cathy is survived by her husband and two sons.

A remembrance gathering will be held in Seattle on January 24, 2026.
We warmly invite all who knew Cathy to join us in celebrating her life and legacy.
Please RSVP to Celebrate Cathy’s Life here to receive details about the time and location.

Cathy’s passion for teaching and her unwavering care for her students touched countless lives. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

This Week’s News

Last Call for Toy and Book Donations for Holiday Baskets! Due 12/10

Help us make the holidays magical for our families!

Toy Box, with Teddy Bear, Guitar, Ball, Watercolor, clown, robot. Vector illustration cartoon.

Toy and book donations should arrive at school by Wednesday, December 10, so our holiday helpers can create the gift bags for families.

After-School Enrichment – Registration Opens 12/8

Paper versions of the flyers are also coming home via kidmail. More information is also available on the Hall of Fame Website.

Winter Quarter classes will run on Thursdays (1/15-3/12). After-school camp is only offered on days when SPS is in session, so there will be no HOFTC Thursday 2/19.

When registration opens on Monday, December 8th at 9AM, you will be able to send enrollment requests through the Parent Dashboard by clicking Enrollment, and then Enroll for 2025-2026. New families should complete the New Family Enrollment Form prior to registration opening, to get through the process faster. Registration closes on Friday, December 19th at 11:59PM and schedule adjustments cannot be made after that time. Please note that class information will not be available in the Parent Dashboard until registration goes live.

Also, you will notice a new pricing structure on the flyer. Effective October 1, 2025 the State of Washington is now enforcing a new retail tax on live presentations. This includes after-school enrichment classes (FYI our understanding as of right now, this new tax does NOT impact summer camp). The tax rate is based on the address of the “presentation”, so all programs in Seattle schools will be priced to include a 10.35% tax to the cost of the class.

Multicultural Night Planning Meeting

Our first planning meeting will be Friday, December 12 at 2:30 p.m. in Room 205.
All families are welcome! Children may come with their adult volunteers.

If you can’t attend, we will share a volunteer sign-up for the January 21 event soon.

If you have any questions or ideas, please email Ms. Rachel Modi at rdheideman@seattleschools.org.

First Annual Olympic View Read-a-Thon

Open book revealing graphic elements that symbolize stories, ideas and/or imagination.

We want to encourage lots of reading during Winter Break! Family, friends and neighbors can motivate students by pledging donations for reading. These donations to the PTA will then help fund our library and 5th Grade Campers!

Look for a flyer and calendar tracker to come home in kid mail along with extra books from the OV library before Winter Break. Kids can keep track on paper or through our fundraising website.

There will be treats for everyone who participates and prizes for the kids and classes that read the most minutes.

A note from Nurse Angie

  • Starting on January 6, SPS will not be allowing students to come to school if they are not up to date with their childhood vaccines.  If you have received notices from me or the district, please make your child an appointment to receive any required immunizations.  Notify me as soon as you make your appointment so we can ensure your child is able to remain in school.
  • If you need any help accessing healthcare, SPS offers free healthcare to all enrolled students.  Contact Robert Eagle Staff Middle School’s Health Center to make an appointment: 206-548-5770, press option 1 to make an appointment. Their website is here with more information.
  • We are seeing an uptick in viral illness at school.  Please keep your child home if they are feeling unwell.  This allows them to heal faster and helps stop the spread of germs in our community.  Discuss at home, the importance of handwashing and covering coughs and sneezes.
  • Winter brings an increase in cases of lice!  Please check your child weekly for lice and nits.  Here is a visual tool from the CDC to help with this.

As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.  Enjoy your break from the school schedule next week.

Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)

The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests it.  The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week.  We need volunteers to help with picking up from the Food Bank on Thursday afternoons and packing on Friday mornings from about 8:00-9:00 am. If you are able to help during this timeframe, please sign up

We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Approved volunteers can feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday, after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time.

We can always use plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store).  If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.
