Letter from Principal Bean
Dear Families,
No School on Friday: This Friday, October 10 is a teacher in service day.
October Changemaker Assembly: This month we will be focusing on the theme of responsibility. We have our first Changemaker assembly tomorrow, and it will feature our PE teacher Ms. Bruecher and her circus arts team.
Disability history month: October is Disability history month. This year, we are moving beyond awareness to focus on acceptance by creating school cultures where students of all abilities feel respected, included, and valued. Here is a link to many books that celebrate people with disabilities. Virtual Reading Rooms
Student Crossing Guards: Our fifth-grade students are starting their patrol on Monday. Please show extra patience as they learn to navigate the complicated traffic circle intersection.
Indigenous Peoples’ Day Assembly: We will have an assembly on Monday, October 13 for Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Included in the assembly will be the unveiling of our new Land Acknowledgement Mural that was created by Native American storyteller/artist Roger Fernandes and all OV students who helped paint it. We have invited Mr. Fernandes back for the ceremony, and he will share a story as well! Indigenous Peoples’ Day Resources
Picture Day: Individual Picture Day will be on Tuesday, October 14. Order School Pictures
Help with Abandoned Vehicles: I have been working with our security office and filed a report with the Seattle Police Department about abandoned vehicles on 5th Avenue next to our playground. The security department recommended that I share this with the community because the more complaints will cause this issue to be more prioritized. Report Abandoned Vehicles: Find It, Fix It
In partnership,
Mr. Bean (he/him)

5th Grade LEGO Robotics Team
OV is starting a LEGO Robotics team for 5th graders! We will train toward a competition in December, and we could use some help to prepare! The competition requires we practice on a specific tabletop that we need help getting built. Are you handy and want to help out? We need someone to build and assemble our competition table.
Please reach out to Heather Pierce-Maiani at hapiercemaia@seattleschools.org if you think you can help!
Lil’ Tiger Ice Cream PTA Fundraiser – October 10
Please join us for an Olympic View PTA fundraiser at Lil’ Tiger Ice Cream on October 10. Lil’ Tiger will be donating 40% of sales to the PTA for anyone that mentions they are coming from Olympic View School that day, so be sure to mention that when you make your purchase!
Lil’ Tiger is located at 12348 Lake City Way NE in Seattle and is open 2-10 PM on Friday October 10. Please contact Rob Wilson, wilson5113@gmail.com, with any questions.
Fall Festival – October 17
The Olympic View Fall Festival is Friday 10/17 from 4-7 PM.
This is the one and only opportunity for kids to wear their costumes, so feel free to wear them for the event. We’ll have all the Fall Festival favorites like the haunted house, games, photo booth, cotton candy, quiet room, and food for you to enjoy!
Volunteers Needed!! We have setup, cleanup, and opportunities to help for both shifts at the Fall Festival. Have no fear, you’ll still have plenty of time to enjoy the event! Older siblings and others are welcome to help as well, they can earn service hours!
Cake Contest entry information can be found in the Fall Festival flyer kids brought home this past week. Awards at ALL grade levels! Bake and decorate your signature cakes and bring them in between 7:30 and 8:30 AM on Friday, 10/17!!
Chili Contest – bring your best chili and take home this year’s “Best Chili” title. Your chili also feeds Fall Festival guests and helps raise money to support the event. This is a great way to support the event if you can’t attend or can’t volunteer.
Sign up here in the Chili Cook-Off section of our SignupGenius.
Please contact Rob Wilson at wilson5113@gmail.com with any questions.
Cake Contest – Cake Kits
For the Cake contest, there is a limited number of complimentary “cake kits” that will be available for pick-up October 15 and 16 on a first request basis for families who may need assistance. Please reach out to Mrs. Joyce via TalkingPoints or email, jecho@seattleschools.org if your family needs one so she can add you to the pick-up list.

Eagle Pack Volunteers Needed (and bags too)
The Eagle Pack program provides weekend food bags for any family that requests it. The University Food Bank provides the food items, and volunteers pack the bags and distribute them to classrooms every week. We need volunteers to help with picking up from the Food Bank on Thursday afternoons and packing on Friday mornings from about 8:00-9:00 am. If you are able to help during this timeframe, please sign up.
We would love to have some consistent volunteers, so if you can commit to one or more Fridays a month, that would be helpful. Approved volunteers can feel free to drop into the lunchroom any Friday, after drop off to lend a hand as well if you find yourself with some time.
We can always use plastic and paper shopping bags (the thicker, handled ones like from Target or a grocery store). If you have extras you can donate, please drop them off in the office.

Calling all art lovers!
We are in need of volunteers to support our wonderful art education offerings at Olympic view. Currently we have openings for:
- Art Docents: The Art Docent Program is a PTA sponsored enrichment activity for all students at all grade levels. Art Docents receive complete training, as well as all materials and support to teach the lesson and display the student art. It’s a great way to get to know your student’s class and see the enthusiasm for this outstanding program. It’s also a LOT of fun! Lessons are offered five times during the school year, from October to June. Each lesson requires about an hour of time for training, and an hour or so to give the lesson and hang the art.
** Art Docent Training, Lesson 1 is this Tuesday, September 30, 8-9 AM in the Cafeteria. Please join us, no rsvp required. We will start with information and introductions about the program, so just stop in! If you cannot make the trainings, the written lessons and materials are available as training; you can also be an assistant to a classroom Docent.
Please contact Docent Coordinator Laura Rogneby at ovdocents@gmail.com for more details or to sign up.
- Wonderful Wednesday Helpers: Once a month we have a lunch recess art activity that is absolutely beloved by the students. From 11am-1pm, we offer a small project either outside on the playlot or in the main lobby, supporting seasonal themes and exploring a variety of materials.
- Fall Festival (10/17) and Science Night Volunteers: Throughout the year we offer other volunteer opportunities.
Please contact Cara Mattera at enrichment@ovpta.org for more information, and look for information weekly in The Eagle.
